We have our own copy but wanted to share our love of it with our family, so we used this book as one of our prizes for a costume contest at our family party. It was a very popular prize everybody loves the stories within.

Classic storys

Maybe it's because I'm now an adult, or this world has developed far deeper levels of horror, but this book wasn't all that scary. I loved this as a child and thought it was terrifying. It's a great book if you want to lightly memorize some of the stories and then be able to tell them around a campfire.

I had this book when I was young and loved it so when I saw it I had to get it for my son. It was a used good condition one I got for a great price, can't beat it! My son started reading it and likes the stories just as I did.

My brother and I were obsessed with this book growing up. I remembered the cover completely and how insanely scary the stories were. Twenty years later, I knew what the cover looked like and even lines from some of the stories. I searched for the book for nostalgic purposes, but going back and reading a lot of the stories are just as funny as they are scary.About half of this book's charm comes from the original illustrations by Stephen Gammell (1989). The original pictures were extremely horrifying yet somehow so silly that it's difficult to describe. Sometimes we'd even make up our own scary stories to go along with the pictures. Unfortunately, the book has been reissued with new illustrations by Brett Helquist--the new illustrations have been very disappointing to most reviewers and seem pretty dull. If you are inclined to buy the book for the stories, those are the same between editions. However, be careful if you want a copy with particular illustrations as the two prints are not often distinguished. Hope this helps!

With fabulous illustrations. For the adult reader I think the end notes are the best part. If you like this sort of thing I recommend the Bone and Sickle podcast.

I loved this book when I was a kid. The pictures in this copy are just, amazing, creepy, outstanding. I really like that the stories are all collected from various sources. I still love this book just as muchI recently learned a new set has been released with different pictures. Trust me. You want this copy!!!!!!!
