The True Icon: From the Shroud of Turin to the Veil of Manoppello

Authors such as  Peter Kreeft and Father Ronald Tacelli , as well as  Josh McDowell , have wonderfully and clearly stated a few powerful points....Reasonable people do not deny that Jesus Christ was a great moral figure. Yet, Jesus Christ made the incredible claim to be God! More than that, Jesus offered evidence of His divinity - the most astounding of which concerned predictions - and fulfillment - of His resurrection from the dead.After the authorities killed Jesus, the last thing they wanted was for His followers to immortalize Him. So, they fortified His tomb and stationed a guard. Somehow, the tomb was empty on that first Easter morning. To posit that a few formerly sheepish pals - most of whom had been MIA on Friday afternoon - could have snatched and forever hidden His body doesn't make any sense.While the Church has not definitively said so, there are compelling reasons to think that the Shroud of Turin and the Veil of Manoppello are the burial cloths described in  John: 20 . Paul Badde believes that seeing these marked the beginning of Jesus' sheepish pals becoming powerful witnesses.

An excellent report on the possible history of the shroud... perhaps its biblical foundations in the Gospels... possible historical references to its sightings or reports from before the time it appears in Europe (e.g. its time in Edessa)... and a wonderful sense of awe and reverence for the shroud itself as exemplified by the attention given to it by saints and popes and scientists... I read this text on site of a recent visit to the exposition of the shroud in Turin in 2015 and found it amplified my already devout appreciation of modern day science and its study of the shroud. This book is written by a scholar of engaging personality and not just a review of the facts and thereby the reader becomes engaged in the travels necessary to see its past history.

This book is for believers and non-believers. If you believe that Jesus rose from the dead, and left His image in two formats for His disciples then this book will reinforce this miracle.If you are a non-believer, then you should purchase this book and read and see what Jesus Christ has done for you, so that you would believe in Him. "Whoever has ears ought to hear..."After reading Paul Badde's first book "The Face of God", I have been drawn to Christ's Holy Face. Now with Badde's second book, "The True Icon", I am even more convinced that this is truly an image left for mankind to remember Him, who died on a cross for our salvation, and rose from the dead so that we might see the Gift from Heaven, which is eternal life.I pray that everyone who hears of this book will buy one for themselves and another one for a friend. There is no better way to evangelize the Good News that 1)Jesus Christ lives today, 2) Jesus Christ has saved us from our sins, and 3) that a life in Christ will bring us to everlasting life.

I have given a number of presentations titled, "The Shroud of Turin, the Convergence of Faith & Science, or an Unholy Hoax?". I have read a number of books on the Shroud that focus on the scientific investigations. This book focuses on the travels of the Shroud and Sudarium, and the author gives an excellent photojournalistic view of his travels to where these two ancient artifacts have been.I purchased this book after having read a library copy. It is now part of my permanent Shroud collections.

When in doubt, please read this book. It will renew your faith again.

If you have read the first book of Paul Badde, German Author, The Face of God...this book The True Icon completes the first book.I have traveled these roads..from Turin to Rome and Manoppello (116 miles from Rome)...and how miraculous it is that these Relics sort of protected themselves from distructions..especially from man. But now, it is here for us to reflect on the LOVE of Christ..to remember and hope that we will preserve and protect them for future generations.

The True Icon is a coffee table sized book with numerous beautiful pictures of the Shroud of Turin, the Veil of Manopello and the historical places and people associated with them. It also contains information I did not know even though I have been a "Shroudie" for years. God is so generous to leave such supernatural signs in a continuing effort to convince the Doubting Thomas in all of us that He exists. I am a lifelong Roman Catholic and had never heard of the "fire" that comes to Jesus' alleged burial tomb every Holy Saturday at 2pm. God is great!

Wonderful book. Perused this prior to a visit to Manoppello to visit the Veil in Nov 2013. I bought this after reading the author's other book, "The Face of God," while I was deciding whether or not to make a trip to see the veil. The photos in this book convinced me I could (and should) go to Manoppello and I was glad I did.On a side note: I emailed the author, Paul Badde, prior to my visit and he wrote back to me straight away and was very kind and helpful.

This is a well researched book that points to the Holy Face of Manoppello being the veil that was placed over the shroud of Jesus in His burial tomb. The veil is made of the silk from mussels and the image on it is 'not made by human hands'. Beautiful photographs make this book a pleasure to look at and a treasure to keep.
