Nice Book
I'm getting a great work out with this book. It gives you access to the play along loops for the exercises, which makes it really nice.

This is exactly what I got from Gary when I ...
This is exactly what I got from Gary when I was at MI in 93'. Todd Johnson will teach the same, but with modules, Bob Magnusson, Steve Bailey and so on. Thye all stress on Chords, rather than scales for improv. I found the book a bit tricky for a begginer, or someone without theory knowledge. If your theory is shaky, you will suffer with this book and implementing it would be almost impossible. I would recomend to start with Todd Johnson Modules, theory, and then hit this book.

Good for single note lines that satisfy the harmony (solos, walking lines to name 2 applications)
This is also "why thinking 'chords' is better than thinking 'scales'; it's a comprensive study in how to study harmony as it applies to single-note lines

There are much better books out there. Wish I didn’t spend my money on it.

not helpful
It seems to me that this book was written for jazz walking bass only. It is also not very helpful because there are hardly any exercises to practice the theory being presented. It is easy to say things like: "Use passing tones between chord tones", or :"Try to stay away from always playing the root on beat one". A short 2 bar example following is not of much help either. The other problem I had with this course was the author attempting to make the student "see all the chord tones of each chord throughout the entire fingerboard". Again this may be possible with correct exercises, otherwise only experts with many years of playing exprience would be capable of that.I was learning from "Walking Bass Lines" by Ed Friedland at the time and I must admit that this is a much better manual and explains the same material followed by simple and developmental exercises. You will get so much more out of this book than FBH.All in all this manual is for pros that most likely already know all the material. (refresher course maybe?)But if you are learning bass you won't get very far before you dump this into your closet.

I definitely recommend this book!
This is my first Amazon.com purchase. This book/CD has great information for 4,5, and 6 string bass guitars. The condition of the book/CD is excellent! Thank you very much!

A Book for the Advancedd Player 6
Once you are through about Grade 6 or at that sort of level you need to be getting into some proper tough stuff and stop playing around with just patterns. This is one of three or four books I use with students to get them into creating original basslines. Try MI, Bass Blueprints, and Ed Friedland's Bass Improvisstion alongside this book. And practice your advanced pattens with Basslines, Funk Bass - the fingerstyle one not the slap and pop version.
