A necessary tool for modern maintenance
The fact of life is that as automobiles have become more and more complex, with electronic control of systems that used to be fully mechanical, the tools needed to perform routine maintenance tasks have also increased in complexity. This tool, the Ancel VD700, is a maintenance tool tailored to VAG vehicles that can read and reset the common interval timers and fault codes, as well as push the virtual buttons necessary to perform some routine maintenance tasks, like retracting the rear caliper pistons on models with electronic parking brakes. What it is not is a diagnostic tool that also performs other, more in-depth functions, like control unit coding, reveal granular details, or perform data logging, like the Ross-Tech VCDS system that is often cited by VW enthusiast owners. Nor is it a $200 tool cable that also requires connection to a Windows computer to function, as VCDS does. While VCDS is undoubtedly more capable, and its basic license supports the servicing of three vehicles, the scope of that system may extend beyond the needs, or desires, of many owners who simply wish to perform routine maintenance, and not deep diagnostics or customization of their vehicles. For those with more modest needs, the VD700 can do the job, and as a piece of autonomous hardware, also carries one significant advantage over the phone app-based, cloud-connected diagnostic tool options. While those types of tools are also very capable, and popular, their reliance on cloud connections, and subscription-based revenue models can present their own challenges and foibles. One faulty link in their chains can turn a routine task into a tech support ordeal, not aided by the fact their developers can be based overseas in different time zones, not conducive to getting timely, or easy support. When a job needs to be done, on time, with the vehicle off road, having the tool fail you is among the most frustrating circumstances one may experience. Ultimately, the "right tool for the right job" is the mantra that rules, so plan and act accordingly. Each has its use cases, and the owner will have to decide which suits their needs best. But even a simpler tool like the VD700 can easily justify its cost with one job, like the halving the cost of a routine brake job, compared to having it done by a shop.

Good upgrade without breaking the bank
Excellent tool, it does so much more than my cheap off brand one. I've been fighting a radio issue for a while and it turns out it was a battery registration issue. Fixed that in about 30 seconds and all is working again.

Great value for the money, and the manufacturer provides incredible support service.
I purchased this primarily to reset the oil service reminder on my Huracán, which requires a rather specific (and non-intuitive) set of steps to complete the process. At first the VD700 did not reset the reminder, so I emailed the manufacturer for support. Wow... they were amazingly responsive, sending me fast replies and providing new versions of the firmware for me to try while they figured out what was going wrong. I would send an email in the late afternoon or evening, and I usually had their reply when I woke up the next morning, so I’m truly impressed by how quickly they responded with each new version to try. After a couple of updates I finally was able to reset the reminder. For a device at this price point, and for a specialty car that I’m sure they have very few customers using it on, I sure didn’t expect personalized service to diagnose a problem, but they really were there to support me. The scanner itself seems to be solidly constructed, and the cable is long enough that you can comfortably use the device while it’s plugged into your OBD2 port. The User Manual would benefit from more examples that show all of the steps for the manual functions. Once you understand how the scanner’s menus work it’s pretty easy to use, but if you’re going to have to manually set any parameters in your vehicle (versus using the built-in automatic routines that they provide for the most common procedures), more detailed examples in the User Manual would definitely give you more confidence diving into the manual operations. As an example, if you need to manually set the value of a Channel (in VAG mode), it lets you select a Channel number and then it asks you for the value to write to it. At this point it’s not clear that you’re going to have a chance to see the existing value before overwriting it with the new value (it turns out you do, and you get a chance to back out before committing the change), so it made me nervous about pressing the Next button. If you don’t need to go beyond their automatic routines, it’s very simple to use even without a better User Manual. So despite some rough edges with the User Manual, this seems to be an excellent value, and the manufacturer’s support was way better than I expected.

Works on VW’s
Ordered this unit after my $400 unit from harbor freight could not put a VW INTO brake maintenance mode. Worked perfectly on both a 2018 and 2019 model year VW.

Bought to remove service due light on audi
Bought this to clear the service due light on my 14 Audi a7 as well as to do the brakes and it does both. Nice and easy to use. Was worth the money just to get that wrench off my display.

Perfect for Volkswagen Products.
This device has worked precisely as advertised. I have been able to do all the things the description said it would do, and even more. I’m connecting it to an Audi and a VW Tiguan and have no issues. Resetting oil change intervals, service intervals, releasing Electronic Parking Brake, running diagnostics on the vehicles, checking the battery, etc. I suggest downloading the PDF manual online as the instructions that come in the box are pretty weak. I would recommend this device to people who own any of the Volkswagen products.
