Does the item damage the wall/paint when removed?

Haven't removed it so can't say, but it stays put no problem. We have a bunch of keys hanging on it.

I'd like to use these to decoratively hang a few coffee mugs from the wall in my kitchen. Would these work for that purpose?

What I had ordered was actually a towel bar to hang a towel so this product would not work for your purpose. Check their web site for hooks. Hope this helps!

Are they large enough to hold a curtain rod that my husband can't find time to hang?

I guess it would depend on the size of the curtain rod, but it would not work for any curtain rods that I have hung. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to hang a curtain rod (I just looked) in case you'd like to learn a new skill. Good luck.
