Discovery

Already announced to be released again in a deluxe version in 2014 we had to wait for another 2 years before this was realised. Finally here it is, in a box set with discs, the first with the complete original album plus several common of obscure bonus tracks. The title track "To France" in a somewhat longer version (about half a minute more music with an instrumental interlude) and "Trick of the Light" as an instrumental, contrary to the sung version by Barry Palmer en Maggie O Reilly. These were already included in the bigger compilations. Likewise "Afghan" is not complete new but to be found on many other outings. Two other tracks were released on vinyl at the time. It shows how prolific Oldfield was, he lived inside his studio, it seems. Furthermore he recorded in the same year (1984) the sound track of The Killing Fields and he performed with his band many live shows. The sound of this new CD is fresh and clear. That is a first improvement to my own CD. The extra tracks are not unwelcome. On the second disc is a suite, made by (parts) of the songs on the album and additional material. I have listened to it a few times but can not make much of it. Anyway, the main reason to buy this album again is the far better sound, the booklet with inside information behind the album (without the song lyrics this time) and some extras. .

I know Discovery from my childhood, we had it on a cassette, I bought all the other albums we had as well - but Discovery was not available. I was very sad because there are such beautiful songs like Poison Arrows (I still feel like this one is a little bit quieter compared to the rest, but that's probably the beginning, but wait for the solo - and those drums throughout all the way to the end, superb), Talk About Your Life and instrumental Lake that fascinated me for ever. I just checked whether - by chance - this album is not in stock - and here it is, 2016 and we can finally buy it. I don't care about bonuses, the album is great. I was contemplating the deluxe release, but I'm very happy with the album itself (CD only with 5 hardly necessary bonus tracks). Very reasonable price as well. Sure, I forgot to mention To France (no question Maggie is the voice of Mike Oldfield in this era) but these are all really good songs. If anything really stands out I believe it's The Lake, hands down.

I was 16 back in 1984 and owned all of Mike's lps upto this. I didn't buy it and never regretted. I started collecting Mike's work again after 1990. All these years later I buy Discovery and played it today. I knew the original lp and although To France was a hit I don't care for it much. The Lake is ok. For me, Talk About Your Life is the album's highlight.I have reviewed The 1984 Suite under the vinyl version. It was for the Suite that I bought the deluxe. I had found Zombies on YouTube but not impressed. The 1984 Suite is poor. Just the tracks segued together with just a few extra notes, nothing exciting. The cut between The Killing Fields and Etude is too abrupt. Probably its the end of side one of the vinyl.The 5.1 mix is nice but again nothing special. I guess I was anticipating something like the experience of the 5.1 Tubular Bells mix.The packaging is ok. Digipack houses 2 discs in trays the dvd is placed in the end cardboard sleeve. The essay in the glossy booklet is interesting. Nice photos. The dvd shows the 1984 Suite lp cover as the moving wallpaper when playing the Suite.

Not I would say one of mikes best albums but still good and a must for avid Mike oldfieild fans

Mike has done a great job at mastering, just as he has done with previous albums, great to see the extra tracks, great sound, worth the upgrade, great album back then and now.

You have to get this remastered edition plus you get another album for free , you will love it all .

"Discovery" mit dem Hit "To France", gesungen von Maggie Reilly, war das Album, das mir als CD noch fehlte, nun habe ich sie mir in der neuen Fassung gekauft und finde diese LP noch immer phantastisch. Neben wunderschönen, eingängigen Popsongs wie "To France", "Crystal Gazing" oder "Trick Of The Light" gibt es auch das über 12minütige Instrumentalwerk "The Lake", das ein wenig an seine ersten vier Alben der 1970er Jahre erinnert. Das Remastering finde ich gelungen und die Bonustracks gut ausgewählt, besonders "Afghan" finde ich wunderbar. Eine Melodie, die mich berührt, instrumental eingespielt, eine echte kleine Mike-Oldfield-Perle, die fast ein bisschen klingt, als hätten Björn und Benny von ABBA sie komponiert. Kaum zu glauben, dass die erste Veröffentlichung auf LP schon 32 Jahre zurückliegt, ich hatte sie schon jahrelang nicht mehr gehört. Mike Oldfield gehört für mich, zugegebenermassen vielleicht eher ungewöhnlich, zum Besten, was Popmusik je zu bieten hatte, zumindest alles, was in den 70ern und 80ern von ihm erschienen ist (Ungewöhnlich deshalb, weil ich heute viel Schlager höre). Diesen Künstler sollten sich einfach alle mal in Ruhe anhören, am besten in der Reihenfolge des Erscheinens der LPs, da er sich im Laufe der Jahre auch immer wieder verändert hat. Die ersten vier Alben (am besten in der Deluxe-Edition bestellen!) waren Instrumentalwerke, in den 80ern hat er sich darauf konzentriert, kürzere Einzelstücke zu schreiben und es kamen Vocals dazu (öfter von Maggie Reilly, aber auch von z. B. Bonnie Tyler auf "Islands", eines seiner genialsten Stücke), von denen einige grosse Hits wurden wie "Moonlight Shadow" oder "To France". Und, kaum zu glauben, fast jährlich gab es eine neue LP von ihm, maximal gab es anfangs mal ein Jahr Pause, aber dann ging es wieder weiter. So viel Kreativität würde ich mir heute manchmal wünschen!!! Da warten viele oft drei Jahre bis zum neuen Album und dann ist es nicht einmal wirklich so viel anders als die vorangegangenen. Ein Hoch deshalb auf ein Genie wie Mike Oldfield!!!

Para mí Discovery es un album especial. Tuve la suerte de ver su puesta en escena en el concierto del Discovery Tour en el Estadio Román Valero de Madrid. Habré escuchado sus canciones cientos de veces (aún conservo el casette original). Por tanto, este álbum "actualizado"era para mí muy esperado. Al igual que os pasa a muchos de vosotros, a mí me parece que el mejor Oldfield es el de sus 20 primeros años, y en los 80 lanzó una colección de discos caracterizados por una canción instrumental larga (The Lake, llamada así porque el álbum se grabó frente al lago Geneve en Suiza) y varias canciones cortas del que este es una de sus mejores muestras (cuyo título original, Discovery and The Lake, está compuesto por una de las canciones vocales cortas y la larga instrumental). Esta edición incluye el álbum original "remasterizado" junto a sus bonus tracks (los que venían en los Maxi Singles de la Época de To France y Tricks of the light. In the pool es deliciosa, pero Bones es posiblemente la canción más tétrica de Oldfield, digna de una peli de miedo. Parece que la percusión está hecha a base de huesos como indica su título), además de lo que llama "The 1984 Suite" y la versión en DVD en 5.1 de éste. En cuanto al primero, no soy capaz de distinguir nada nuevo de los de su época original. Lo bueno está en el segundo, y sobre todo en la versión DVD: sublime su remezcla. Ojo, que a pesar de que algunos nombres os pueden parecer nuevas canciones, no lo son: The Royal Mile es una nueva versión de Afghan (la cara B del single de Tricks of the Light) y Zombies es una versión con voz robotizada de Poison Arrows (podéis ver el vídeo en YouTube pues salió con motivo del Halloween de 2015). Mi opinión del álbum es buena, imprescindible para los que os gusta el Oldfield de esa época y solamente por el DVD (5.1 surround & 96 KHz) merece la pena. Ah! Y también incluye los vídeos de To France, Etude y Tricks of the Light...

Mike Oldfield had (for the time being) "grown out of" his meandering instrumentals, and had decided to form (loosely) a band which he took on the road (despite his aversion to live performance). He had particular success with Five Mile Out and Moonlight Shadow, particularly because Maggie Riley’s contributions particularly enhanced Oldfield’s writing and performance, and her stunningly clean vocal is perfect for the highlights of this album, the best of the three: cases in point, “To France” a song referencing Mary Queen Of Scots with a gorgeous Celtic lilt, “Crystal Gazing” and “Talk About Your Life”. The remaster has the 'long' (i.e., the 12" single version of "to France".Mikey wasn't entirely clear of the long instrumental - the closer, “The Lake” is 12 minutes, which as you might expect, moves in many exploratory areas, flashing from Hank Marvin styled lead guitar to waves of synths and Fairlights.Oldfield has since reverted to his comfort zone - the long instrumental (especially myriad versions and variations of Tubular Bells) features prominently in his more recent work. But for a time there, his band period was a welcome change, and Discovery was in my opinion the best of that period.

Discovery es uno de los grandes álbumes de Mike, y la versión Deluxe merece la pena: contiene el álbum original con un sonido excelente, junto con varias piezas de caras-B muy buenas, y lo mejor: las nuevas versiones de The Lake y Discovery contenidas en el "1984 Suite", tanto en estéreo como en 5.1. The Lake es una versión extendida (dura casi dos minutos más) y Mike ha hecho una mezcla donde las guitarras y las baterías se oyen mucho mejor y más puras; el final de The Lake parecía insuperable en la versión original, pero este (a pesar de que inicialmente me desconcertó) me gusta todavía más (a observar el fantástico bajo), y Discovery es aún más cañera que el original. Totalmente recomendable.

A mio parere questa edizione poteva benissimo contenere qualche live dell'epoca al posto della suite in DVD (inutile) visto che quando si acquistava il vinile (anno 1984) conteneva tutte le date titolata "Discovery Tour 84" nei vari paesi europei per la promozione appunto di questo studio album. Aver visto Qualche live incluso sarebbe stata una vera chicca di sicuro molto apprezzata. I livelli di ascolto sonori su CD sono ottimi così come l'audio a più sessioni in DVD (24Bit/96Khz-DTS-PCM)

Darauf habe ich lange gewartet. In den 1980ern bin ich mit Crises und Discovery groß geworden. Als Jugendlicher hatte ich das Discovery-Album, das irgendwann mal verschollen war. Jetzt gibt es endlich diese CD-Edition mit Bonus-Tracks, gutem Klang. Alles bestens. Nur beim Booklet hätte ich mehr Infos gewünscht, dafür gibt es einen Stern Abzug. Ansonsten: Für mich immer noch eins meiner Lieblingsalben überhaupt. Und dazu: ein unschlagbarer Preis.

Concordo con l'utente che aveva fatto notare quanto fosse deludente il materiale relativo al DVD.Sarebbe stato, anche secondo il sottoscritto, molto più apprezzato un dvd che riportasse delle performances livedel tour Discovery (vedi concerti tenuti a San Sebastian e a Viareggio nell'estate del 1984).Molto apprezzati invece i CD.Mike Oldfield artista geniale

erst hatte man das Album analog, dann digital. Die Vinylscheibe, da oft gespielt, war schon in die Jahre gekommen und da kam die Neuauflage gerade recht. Es ist nach all der Zeit immer noch ein tolles Album, was man auch heute noch hören kann und welches auch heute noch begeistert.

Auf Discovery mag ich "the Lake", aber nicht so sehr wie andere instrumentale Stücke von Mike Oldfield. Und ich liebe To France (mehr als Moonlight Shadow). Gut ist auch Talk about your Life. Verglichen mit der LP enthält diese Versionen Bonus-Material, etwa In the Pool, Bones, Afghan sowie extended versions.

Nice edition including the original album, rare bonus tracks, the 1984 Suite and a crystal clear 5.1 surround mix of the original album. This is Mike Oldfield, Magggie Reilly and Simon Phillips at their best. I'm not sure about the Zombies remix, but still, overall 5 stars.

Die CD klingt einmalig gut. Das Remastering ist sehr gut gelungen, der Sound ist prima. Die alten Titel sind schöner denn je.

for those Oldfield fans who enjoy/love this album, the surround remixes of key tracks are fabulous. it's a shame that some multi-track tapes are missing so the full album could not be remixed. At the very least we get an album's worth of material, augmented by the tracks from The Killing Fields. A new way to appreciate this music

Gran bel cd anzi gran bei cd il dvd non l'ho capito ma nel complesso è okay. Oldfield e garanzia di buona qualità musicale. Cofanetto da consigliare

J'ai acquis ce boitier plutôt pour le disque 3, proposant des formats haute résolution, étant plutôt "audiophile", tout en appréciant le grand "Mike". Eh bien surprise, mon processeur SONY E-9000es et mes deux lecteurs DVD (dont un OPPO blu-ray) ne commutent pas en 96/24, en PCM ou en DTS... Ils lisent ce support comme un DVD standard en 48 khz. Mystère. Ce qui me chiffonne aussi, c'est le pseudo-logo "DVD-audio sur le disque alors que ce support est abandonné depuis des lustres. Je précise que je possède de vrais DVD-audio qui passent sans problème dans ce format 96/24. Déçu, j'ai renvoyé le boitier, et avec le sérieux d'AMAZON, le remboursement a suivi sans discussion. Quelqu'un a-t-il pu tester ce disque avec un autre matériel ad-hoc? Je n'ose penser à une arnaque de l'éditeur...
