Underrated by many
I've only had this for a few days, but I have to go easy on it since it's made by Behringer, king of flimsy products.Oh sheesh. I read so many ridiculously bad reviews about this synthesizer before buying. It's the usual--it's made by Behringer so it's garbage construction which won't possibly work out of the box, it's a blatant copy of the Juno-???, the "raw oscillators" are blah, the only saving grace is the effects section, etc.I have yet to have a Behringer-made gadget fail, and I own many. 'nough said.I think the Deepmind 12d is pretty darn good. It hasn't fallen apart, quit working, not worked, been buggy. It's a little hefty at 11+lbs, but it looks great and sits comfortably on a desktop. It may or may not be a Juno clone (I've never used one) but that's irrelevant, the Juno didn't have the effects, screen, etc.I don't see the point of complaining about the sccreen because it's a B&W LCD. It is good enough, and thank goodness it's not touch-sensitive.(Jupiter-80 anyone?)I find it sounds just fine without effects. Nice pads, organ sounds, some bass. It takes some getting used to (you only get sawtooth or PMW square wave on DCO1, and a square wave on DCO2) but a solid filter mostly makes up for things. The effects are excellent and extremely flexible. Too bad there's no external input, as I feel it would make for a great (though pricy!) FX unit.USB is only for MIDI, as it seems the editor works via MIDI. No digital audio.I suspect it's a bit of a niche unit, as most people would just grab a VST. But as usual, I like knobs to tweak instead of moving sliders on a screen with a mouse. I found it was worth it.

Great Synth, Great Price
This Synth is by far the most amazing synth I've bought. Its got many unique features and qualities, as well as being a great standalone unit. If you are looking for a great synth at a reasonable price, this is one I highly recommend.

I love this thing!
Back in the olden days, I really, really wanted an Oberheim Matrix 12. It was my dream synth. However, back then $3500+ dollars was just not in reach for me (or my parents). Now that I'm all growed up, I bought my own synthesizer, and this Behringer Deepmind 12D was my choice, as I've had decent lucky with previous Behringer products. My only complaint has nothing to do with the device but the documentation; or, rather, the complete lack thereof. You're going to have to hit your favorite search engine or video site to really appreciate what this thing has to offer. There's no shortage of videos or sites offering help. Additionally, Behringer themselves have a channel on that certain platform with a full series on the Deepmind 12 (the Deepmind 12D's sister that comes with a keyboard attached).I use an Alesis VI61 (61 key) MIDI controller, connected through the 5-pin MIDI port.Because of the digital control features on this device, there is an endless array of sound engineering you can explore.

Software is awful, but synth sounds very nice
I installed this as a rack unit that isn't within reach of my workstation. Thus, I was relying on the editor software to swap presets and adjust settings from a distance. Although it works, I had to do a number of workarounds. For instance, the editor software will not connect to the hardware via USB if you're also using USB midi from Ableton LIve. So, I'm using USB for the editor software, and send MIDI to it from Ableton over standard midi... which has limitations and inconveniences.I also find the software finicky and not always functional. The skeuomorphic design is weird because the layout doesn't actually match the hardware itself. All those complaints aside... this is a really great value in a hardware synth. The 16 voices sound amazing for thick poly beds and detuned unison plucks. It's an ideal investment at this price range for anyone who uses a lot of VSTs and wants to get some analog textures in their work.
