Good book + vidz for learning/refreshing
The book is really a book + a series of videos explaining the lessons in the book. I'm finding that to be super helpful when something you read is a bit fuzzy. I'm refreshing my ability to read music, but to provide some context, I learned to read music back in the 1960's when I was learning to play the cornet, so it's a 50-year refresh that's close to learning for the first time (though things are coming back as I go). In any event, reading each chapter and then watching a video lesson is working well to make the info stick. So far the reading is one page with an accompanying page of sheet music; the videos so far have been around 6-to-8 minutes. It doesn't take long to read and then watch each lesson, so a very appropriate and digestible chunk at a time. If you read fluently music already, this will likely bore you; if not, I think odds are good the pacing will suit you. So if you belong to the first group, this may not be the text for you (though you might still find value in having the information presented in a new context), but if you're in the second group, I recommend this book (or package if you will) to you. You should find it comprehendible, coherent, in an easy-to-handle size with the visual aspect of videos to be really conducive to learning.

definitely for beginning musicians
I started playing drums about 3 years into playing bass (grew up on piano, but didn't like it). I could already read music (both treble and bass clefs), so this book wasn't as helpful to me as I thought it would be, although I did learn a few things from it. If you're already a musician but are just starting on drums, I would recommend a different book like 100 Essential Drumset Lessons by Terry O'Mahoney or Drumstick Control by Jeff Moore. Both of these provide a legend for deciphering drum notation and are packed with exercises to greatly improve your playing. Also check out Drumeo on YouTube (being aware that their guest stars are considerably less professional in attitude than their regular staff sometimes, and you have to be careful of those famous drummers who you're allowing to influence you on moral issues--I'm sensitive to this because I'm a Christian). But as far as How to Read Drum Music goes, it's a decent starting place if you are a beginner musician (not just a beginner drummer), although I think the definition of cut time is wrong in the version I have--cut time is really 2/2.

Drum class
I'm 58yrs old, been playing drums my whole life, formally learned in 7th grade band & high-school, now a worship drummer (again). Using this book & others to help teach the next generation. Very well written & thought out, love the online video tutorials. My students can practice at home, not only learning to read music but with a visual aid as well. Highly recommend for beginners & those who need a refresher on reading percussion music.

Best straight to the point on how to read drum music ever!!
This is an excellent book on how to read drum music. I have been teaching for years and like the idea of being able to give extra reading and background to my beginner students to make it easy for them to follow along and understand what's going on with reading and counting. It is now required reading for everyone in or drum program. Thank you Stu!

"How to Read Drum Music" is unique, brilliantly laid out and well written with lots of explanations and examples to back it up. Also, there is a web-site and YouTube videos that assist you in practicing what your taught in the book.

If you want to learn playing drums from scratch it is necessary to learn to read music. This book is a MUST for every beginner and very helpful. The language is simple enough to understand the terms. I would recommend to read the book while on the practice drum/pad and play as it says. This will lay a strong foundation of theory and train the brain on the play patterns.
