By Jonathan Franzen: Freedom: A Novel

Outstanding
I enjoyed this much more than 'the corrections". I'm not sure if it was the story, the telling, or the medium. I listened to this rather than read the hard copy. I thought the device of Patty's book within a book ties things together in an unpretentious and natural manner. It also smoothed the switch from 3rd person to 1st person smoothly and gave anoter person's view of the same events in a novel(to me and pun intended) way.

Excellent! Well written. Plan to take your time to get in touch with characters and the historical timekine.

Another Franzen Classic
Franzen is an expert at character development and like The Corrections, Freedom brings you close to all as if they were part of your immediate family. Can't wait until his next novel!!

Well written novel about extremely unpleasant characters.
I was attracted to this novel for the outstanding literary awards it has received and by the critiques readers have given it. And quite honestly, I usually adore any personal favorite of Oprah! I won't say I hated this novel because it was well written. I will only say I found it excruciatingly irritating how each and all of the characters had the remarkable ability of screwing up their lives do absolutely uneccesarily. There was too much anger and sorrow and regret and lack of empathy... And I learned way too much about North American birds and bird habits. Instead of Freedom I would call this book INSUFFERABLE!
