Top Notch Illustrations
Freedom of the hills is a great end-all-be-all reference book. But chances are you're not going to do any big wall climbing in the same weekend as some glacier mountaineering so it is a little daunting. However if you're already familiar with climbing basics, then this book is the absolute best for glacier travel. The illustrations are detailed, entertaining, and easy to read. The text is not overly wordy and transitions well from subject to subject. I have 3 books that cover this subject, and this is by far my favorite one.

Great fun! Easy to learn from.
The drawings and text make it easy to absorb the information. I recommend this book. I’ll use many of their techniques on my Rainer climb in 2024.

Great idea!
In my opinion a good book must be informative and it needs to keep your interest. This book does both. 90 percent of this book is illustrated with cartoon figures with arrows pointing to all the details (actually more detailed that a photo could be). At first glance you might think this book doesn't offer much in the way of knowledge. Nothing could be farther from the truth. This is one of the best books I have read. It is the type of book that you will refer to often and should be read by anyone looking to venture onto glaciers. Nice job guys.

Live to tell about the book...
Since I bought this book in 2011, I have climbed Mt. Rainier twice. This book is the best book on mountaineering. It is concise with great illustrations which shows/teaches you on how to setup crevasse rescues. Before I read this wonderful book, I knew nothing about mounteering but now I know enough to venture out with my buddies to Mt. Rainier and returned alive to write this review.Thank you book!!!

Great book before exploring the easy glaciers, or to pair up with online courses or glacier courses
Simple, direct, easy and quick to learn and understand. This book is beyond great! I paired this with several online videos, and an intro. course to glacier mountaineering. A lot of what was in the book was covered in the classes. Pretty much the only difference was the experience, preferences, and recommendations from the courses, but this book really did cover a lot! Great for exploring easy glaciers safely in the cascades. Looks like a few others summited Mt. Rainier too based on the reviews. Definitely recommend if you're getting into this, and before buying all your gear!

Very useful crash course in glacier travel.
Informative and with very helpful illustrations. I found this more useful than "Freedom of the Hills" or the other "Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue" book from the Mountaineers. If you had to pick one book, go with this one, but if it's your first time on a glacier I'd recommend reading all the material you can or even taking a class.
