A fantastic children's biography
This was a fantastic, quick read for my daughter for a school report. It was easy to understand, well illustrated and fun. My daughter actually aced her report (which was a first) and could nearly recite parts of it back to me because she liked the information so much. Jackie Robinson is a hero in our household and this book helped him cement his place in my daughter's life. It won't glorify or put the man on a pedestal unwittingly. It is actually very honest and straight forward and that's what I liked about it. It told you the true story in a succinct and blunt way, giving facts of how others played a part in his life and how he was the catalyst for a greater movement that was needed in our history.

Perfect for 2nd grader!
My son became very interested in Jackie Robinson during Black History month. I bought him this book to encourage him to learn more about Jackie so that he would read more. This book challenged him in a great way!

I love this series and truly wish I had discovered it ...
I love this series and truly wish I had discovered it when my older two were in the young reader stage. This series of biographies is well written, filled with intriguing illustrations and perfectly sized short chapters. Most of all for this history minor momma, the ones we have read are historically accurate but written in a way that gives 1-4th graders a love for history. My 8 and 6 year olds eat these up. They are the only books my six year old spends his money on -- and he's reading 2-3 a week at night on his own (he's reading at a 3rd grade level -- and the books are perfect for that ability). Bottomline -- we love these books and according to the younger two, can't own enough of them.

"Playing great baseball was the best way to prove he belonged on the team."
Jackie Robinson was an All Around talented athlete, but baseball was where he found an opportunity to play professionally, and more noteworthy in the eyes of history, he was the first black player on a Major League Team -- for a time, he was the only black player on any Major League team. This introduction to his life offers a nice guide through his life, it highlights opportunities that he didn't have simply because of the time he lived in... I found World War II interfering with his Olympic dream particularly interesting, in part because I had not realized his Olympic connection.I love how this book brings up the challenge he faced in keeping quiet, in feeling the pressure of representing ALL, not just himself when he first made the Big Leagues. It wasn't enough to make it there, he had to stay there, and countless people were looking for excuses to knock him down. His belief that "Playing great baseball was the best way to prove he belonged on the team." is a great attitude, and a lesson each of us can take in to our own lives.

Happy Customer
My children read the book and learned a great deal. It’s like History written for children between the ages of 7 and 12. We order a few of these books when schools were closed - during the Corona pandemic as a way to continue their education.
