Not sure if it’s new
I’m hoping it works. We received it in some kind of pen plus gear box and barely any packing not taped. Box too big for the dvd player. No peel off tape for new unit. When plugged it in was already powered on. Just hope it works

Low-priced for my basic needs. Happy with purchase.

It will die on you.
I knew going in this was not top of the line equipment, but I simply wanted something to play the few dvds we owned and an occasional Redbox. It worked great for about 7 month (maybe 7 movies total) until it gave the dreaded “no disk” like other reviews said. It’s dead. It’s gone. Oh well. Should have forked over more money for a nicer one...

lower quality than I would expect from sony
I bought this unit last summer and initially, I was very happy with it. But, the more and more I use it, the more problems I find with it. The most obvious problem I've found is the streaking. In scenes where there is repeated, rapid change from dark to light, the player displays colored straks momentarily across the screen. Most noticable during scenes like the scene in "Aliens" when the aliems attack the marines in force inside a room lit in red. The gunflashes constrasting against the red light cause the DVD player to render the scene horribly. The whole scene is so marred by these lightning-like color flashes that it is nearly unwatchable.Another noticable problem is it's susceptability to scratches. My copy of "seven" got scratched when I loaned it out to someone (who BTW, will never borrow my DVDs again). The scratches are not bad, but this player rewinds to the beginning of the movie whenever it encounters the scratch. Granted, a scatched disc is not the players fault, but my computer and PS2 can play the disc without interruption. They can also play movies without the streaks. The other problems I've encountered were minor such as the rather weak remote and confusing interface at times. On the plus side, the unit is very compact and weighs very little, so if you have to move it around alot you won't break your back. I also like the selection of connectors you get on the back for the price you pay.If I had the money to buy a DVD player all over again, I would definately consider looking for something else. This players shortcomings are too great to justify buying it when there are superior players available for about the same cost.

An excellent consumer unit.
This is an excellent DVD player for the average person. It is easy to use, a snap to install, and plays DVD's well.It offers both analog and digital output so hooking it up to your surround sound receiver is a breeze. The optical out provides Dolby 5.1 output making the home theater sound you want from a dvd player. The only real drawback I've found is the fact that it doesn't play MP3s like many of the competing models. Adding that feature would round out this player and make it top of the line.Over all I'm very happy with the player and would recommend it to any of my friends or family.

No Disc
I think it lasted a couple of years, then all of the sudden. No disc. It can't seem to decide which format to choose. My portable Samsung is still kickin after lots of abuse. Looks like my next one won't be a Sony, I can't tolerate paying lots of money for a low quality hack.

It worked great ..... until................
This DVD Player was great, a 5 star marvel until 3 days ago, and now it doesn't work at all. "No Disc," it says, and the next thing you know, it's not a matter of a smudged disc, as I cleaned it. It's not a DVD-RW, it was the movie, Grosse Point Blank. Then the Big Lebowski. Then Independence Day, Face/Off, and the list grows. No warning, no signs, just suddenly, "NO DISC."I don't know what the life expectancy of a Sony DVD Player is, but I have to believe it is more than 18 months.
