I spent a month in Siena recently and got addicted to panforte, a local tradition. This is a delicious panforte and typical of the region. I'm not sure why the mixed reviews, but panforte is somewhat similar to fruitcake, and people either love it or hate it. One of the better features of this brand is that there is more emphasis on the almonds and the candied fruit is much more understated than some others.Panforte is served cut into half inch cubes and goes good with espresso or a cappuccino as a dessert.

I've had this brand panforte several times over the years, and the order from amazon did not disappoint. It was the usual consistency, hard and chewy, but not too hard that it hurts your teeth. The nuts seemed fresh, and the mixture of sweet and spices seemed just right, not overly sweet. For those who have never tried panforte before, think of a compressed fruitcake, but with a little more orange peel spice type flavor, and not as sweet and sticky, although I'm sure it contains plenty of sugar, and is in fact coated in powdered sugar.

I intend to give it as gifts. I have already given a couple.

We order this product every year at Christmastime... this year it took 3 tries for the package to be delivered -- but it was worth the wait. A generous slice of nostalgia for my spouse!

I thought this would be just like the Sapori panforte, but it's not. I like the Sapori much better.
