Love Lyrics (Clay Sanskrit Library, 45)

Great translation of Sanskrit love poetry + commentary
I'm a gigantic fan of the elegant translations by Greg Bailey of Amaru and Bhartrahari. Bhartrahari's verse is beautifully rendered, much better than a much older translation that I originally read it in. This book is a gem.

horrible translation
Amaru's songs are on a too high sublime level for such ordinary scholars as is the translator of Amaru. They simply cannot understand what real love is, how can sexual union be the highest culmination of love, etc. So, tInstead of chosing the subtle language to depict all the nuances of love, this translator is using a very rough materialistic language, even jargon of every day simple life of being marry, eating nicely, and have some sex on the top. So the reader remains thirsty for higher experiences, and he must search somewhere else for the divine inspiration. Like there is one translation of Amaru from 1984 of an Indian author, which is uncomparably more sublime than this one.
