Has anyone seen just the hat for sale, or had success cutting out the hair? I have the rest of the costume but really just need the hat.

You could just count out the hair. It doesn’t go all the way inside the hat. Hope this helps!

Would this fit an 8 year old boys head? I see it as an adult/child hat but don't know if it will be too big?

It might be slightly large for an 8 year old. It fit my head fairly well as a 32 year old man. I wear a hat size 7 1/2. Another answer mentions a strap - I forgot about that, so that should do the trick for you.
