One night in the house, one million bucks, no questions asked. But there is a catch for anyone who accepts the offer. Murder is a way of life at the House on Haunted Hill, a jolting, effects-ramped remake of the 1959 cult classic that starred Vincent Price and was directed by screen horror legend William Castle. Geoffrey Rush plays twisted theme park bigshot Stephen Price, who’s hosting a scary/jokey birthday bash for his wife (Famke Janssen) at an abandoned institute for the criminally insane. Taye Diggs, Ali Larter, Bridgette Wilson, Peter Gallagher and Chris Kattan portray strangers mysteriously assembled for the event that could make them all very rich. Or profoundly dead. And you? We wouldn’t start the party without you. Review: good horror film plenty of gory scenes - good horror film with plenty of blood and gory scenes Review: Blu-ray - Very good horror movie definitely recommend it

"..CLASSIC LATE 90's HORROR REMAKE.."
This review is for the movie and the superior German import Blu-ray. (DO NOT buy the Cult Movie Collection UK version, read below) PLOT... A millionaire with theatrical tendencies, Stephen Price (Geoffrey Rush) invites a number of people to stay in a vast creepy house that used to be an insane asylum. Stephen, accompanied by his bitter wife, Evelyn (Famke Janssen), offers a million dollars to anyone who can stay the whole night without dying. When Stephen and Evelyn become trapped with their guests, they quickly realize that the house really is haunted. This is a classic late 90's horror, a remake of the 50's black and white movie. Updated for a new generation with more lavish effects, a great horror even now after all these years, a good old school ghostly haunted house tale, plenty of great kills, some are bloody, the movie has some good effects for the time, a mix of practical and CGI for the spirit, but still looks cool. The cast is great which also is a thing that makes it work, quite a few famous faces from other movies, some horror. Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of the Caribbean) Famke Janssen (Goldeneye) Ali Larter (Final Destination) Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator) Bridgette Wilson (Mortal Kombat) If you love a good horror its worth picking up for some good popcorn Halloween fun. Make sure you get the German FSK 16 Blu-ray version as it has a much better picture quality and it has many bonus features. The UK Cult Movie Collection version has no features and a transfer which is a disaster, probably the worst your ever seen, the frame rate is so bad and jerky you will have a headache after 2 chapters. The German Blu-ray is UNCUT and runs at 93mins, Great HD picture and runs at the proper speed. Region B Plays in the UK. 1999. English language audio, and German. Subtitles turn off. Features include a commentary, mini featurettes (12mins) Deleted scenes (12mins) trailer, and an extra featurette that talks about the original movie and compares it to the remake (19mins)

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL: CLASSIC HAUNTED HOUSE HORROR!
Haunted house horror. The score composed by Don Davis is classic haunted house horror music and adds a gothic feel to the film. The lead character played by Geoffrey Rush takes on the persona of Vincent Price as this is a remake of his original version with more gore and guts. The plot follows a group of people who must survive the night to win one million dollars each. It is not that simple as there are many evil mechanisms, traps and ghosts providing torture!

90s nostalgia
Bought used. The disc arrived in perfect condition, as did the cover, which turned out to be the old fashioned cardboard and hatch type DVD covers. It's a vintage edition, which I didn't expect but enjoy very much. I haven't had a chance to check out the DVD's many extras yet. I must admit I bought this for nostalgia's sake. The first time I watched this was at a Halloween party as a ninth grader. It did give me a good scare at the time. The theme of a head physician of a hospital wreaking havoc on a bunch of helpless inmates, and their ghosts seeking revenge on the innocent relatives of their captors probably IS enough to scare thirteen year olds, but it's gonne take a bit more substance to give adult viewers the same experience. The cast is packed with stars, however, they're playing characters that do not come naturally to them. Consequently, the dialogue gets stiff and insincere and at times it's as if the actors themselves are annoyed with their own lines. The characters are either so flat, stupid and/or unsympathetic that you don't really care what happens to any of them. There's no real chemistry between anyone, just line delivery which makes it obvious that the script has been re-written too many times for the actors to bother getting into character, a hallmark of not bad acting, but bad directing. The very well-thought-out design, atmosphere and aesthetics of the sets and props did add a noticeable sense of foreboding. They are almost beautiful enough to make the piss poor execution/underwhelming special effects, and the disconnect between these two extremes worth sitting through this film, and why I give it three stars instead of two. It's the only thing about it that gave me a lasting impression.
