Use as Support Manual for Overcoming Difficulties with Number
The Dyscalculia Toolkit is filled to the brim with activities to support basic numeracy for elementary ed children. The book covers basic math skills like division, subtraction, multiplication and addition using concrete manipulatives. Concrete manipulatives are an excellent approach for teaching basic math concepts to all children. The book contains no fraction or decimal work of any kind.I like this book because it provides activities to teach basic numeracy using games, dominoes, and Cuisenaire rods. The book comes with a CD that you can use to print off all the necessary material. Activities also cover a mental math technique called bridging. This technique teaches how to add and subtract using a number line. The subtraction method is also known as complementary addition. Other mental math activities include review of the area model of multiplication, rod activities that emphasize the relationship between multiplication and division, alternative written methods for column addition, and addition by partitioning numbers. There are too many activities to mention in detail.I don't agree overall with the author's abstract approach to the area model of division, so use a method called the partial quotient method for long division with my son. I simply don't like the method but it may work very well with other individuals.I recommend that you purchase Bird's other book Overcoming Difficulties with Number first. It covers all of same info but seems geared towards my 5th grader. If you feel like you need more work, then purchase this book. This book has been a great resource for helping my son; however, I feel like we could have probably lived without it.

but the activities included are excellent and most importantly are working
I bought the ebook version of this so I don't have the CD of games and whatnot it should have, but the activities included are excellent and most importantly are working! My daughter took 6 months to learn to count to 10 and another 6 months to learn to count to 14 using my games and activities. Now with 3 months of Ronit Bird, she is able to add numbers within ten quite easily! Just yesterday she ran into the kitchen and said, "5 and 5 is ten!" after simply playing on her own.

Unimpressed
I bought this book hoping it would offer some tips to help me with my daughter and her math problems. I didn't look at the CD, but I was totally unimpressed with the book. I felt it offered less help than Touch Math.

Fantastic book but problem with CD?
I've just started reading this book and it is great, with loads of helpful and useful information. I can't wait to start using some of the games etc, I cannot find the Appendix and some other files on the CD. Has anyone else had this problem?

Dyscalculia Toolkit
This is an excellent resource of games and ideas for engaging young people who struggle with numeracy. I am looking forward to using these in the classroom when the new term starts, as I know many young people who will benefit.
