The 8-in-one and 10-in-1 have one knife blade which positively locks open. A leaf spring nearly as thick as the blade must be depressed inward toward the body to close it. If that latch doesn't prevent the blade from closing, the knife is defective.

What grade of stainless steel?

A plus in my book. Not to be sarcastic. Not really sure the grade of metal but its a $10 multi-tool from Amazon. We've had it for a while and had to use it a couple times with maximum success. Again I'm not really sure what your expectations are of a $10 multi-tool it's not made of titanium and I don't think it's made to last forever like say a Leatherman but then again it doesn't cost $150 either.
