Works as advertised
These have been great for the new trees. Just run the hose into the bucket; the water leaks out the hole in the bottom into a spike that you put in the ground at the outbound edge of the tree roots. This encourages deep root growth since the water soaks into the ground instead of sitting on the top of the soil. Since these are 5 gallon buckets, you can also tell how much water you are soaking into the ground. Very happy with this product. Trees are an investment and need to be nurtured well when they are first planted. This product delivers.

Worth the hassle (initial problems redeemed by excellent customer service)
Update: I had tremendous difficulty initially getting this to work, but it was a concept I wanted very much to succeed. After excellent back-and-forth responses and guidance from the seller I was able to get this product working in my soil and I'm very satisfied. The trick, for others that have difficulty getting the water to drain properly, is to "plunge" the spikes with a 5/8" wooden dowel when the buckets are full and sitting properly on the spikes. Very worthwhile product and excellent seller.Original Review: When the bucket of water is on the spike, the water doesn't drain out ... this seemed like such a great idea, and I have not idea why my experience is so bad, but I'm very sorry to have spent money on this product ...

great for new tree planting
they are a lot easier to fill and add liquid fertilizer than tree bags for new or old plantings

Idea is good but execution is poor
The holes for the spikes are too close to the edge of the bucket. Spike is unable to be seated properly. The plugs for the buckets are too hard to push in place. Too much hassle. Spikes allow too much water to go through too fast.

Awesome Product
Awesome product. I started out small because I thought was a bit pricey. I then bought several more. It was worth every penny. It made it so simple to water eleven new trees that are a couple hundred yards from my house. I had a quick question and had no problem getting hold of someone. I will definitely buy again.

Great if you own 100 trees
Not great for three - the water does not seep slowly into the ground over hours or days / but just pours into the ground. The only thing this does for you is keep you from having to stand there with a hose and water the plant.Would be helpful for a lot more plants with a water delivery device, but if your just gonna run the hose to the bucket, you might as well run the hose to the plant.

I love seeing Family Owned American companies innovating at such a level. My company is a huge water saving company and we were delighted to find yet another water saving product that was so practical. These are well packaged, sturdy, well designed, and effective. I love the way they came already set up to "plug in". Thank you for taking the extra time to prep that step. I'm certain that your product will go far and I'd be very happy to chat with the owners at some point about taking this product to Africa.

Much Better Than Tree Watering Rings
After Round #1 of planting Arborvitaes, then having them expire 6 months later, started Round #2 planting larger Arborvitaes and installing the root seeker on the three new trees & they are doing well (so far!).The description (of the product) could be better worded, however. Yes, you can fill the bucket with 5 gallons but the water doesn't last a week (as described), it drains nearly immediately. I called SayeGrow (the manufacturer) b/c, initially, I thought I had installed incorrectly but that is how it's intended to function.
