Beginning Relational Data Modeling, Second Edition

The title should be shortened to just "Relational Data Modeling", as it covers beginner level material, and some advanced topics as well. Some of the concepts presented within are directly applicable in the leading (and expensive) commercial E/R modeling tools.

The book calls itself "Beginning", and it does give an excellent basic understanding of a database and how it works, however, it continues on to how to create a conceptual model, and then a logical model, then a physical model. They use simple relational tables for their illustration and I like the way they use a basic deck of cards to explain and illustrate their points. The book is clear and well structured with good examples.The conceptual model chapter is of vital importance (don’t skip it). It is very important that you thoroughly understand what you plan to build including the problems you are trying to solve. When you are done with this book you will have a sound grasp of databases and data modeling principles.

Wide range of concepts and clears up most of the missing parts from other beginning data management books. Overall a good read.

I'm new to the field of data modeling and data base administration. I found this book to be a great way to fill-in the gaps of my knowledge. I would recommend reading the final chapter first and going on from there.

Im new to the Data Model and this book helps me to get started.Obviously they covered many areas and in overall examples are pretty good.Just one complain on the Analysis they took Playing card example which for me tedious I would prefer simple example .Not everyone are expert in Card games.

I didn't know I would like Relational Data Modeling but it turns out I did after looking through the first chapters of this book. Very informative and I like the way the topics are covered.
