Eternals by Jack Kirby: The Complete Collection

Awesome ... however let down by damage
It is an extreme book, it is monster sized, it is probably the biggest book I have ever picked up or tried to pick up. It will have to stay downstairs as the ceiling will probably collapse. As to the contents, well, obviously they are much the same as the epic / complete in that the Kirby tales are included. The quality is superb throughout. It is a massive tale as well, though sadly not one ever completed. As we can't go to the gym at the moment, no need as you could do weight training with this mighty tome or just be amazed by Kirby's artwork. I wonder what the next monster sized volume will be ??Disappointingly after doing this review, noticed a really bad dent in the book. Sadly this seems to be happening more and more with my A. deliveries and I probably won't be buying any more similar tomes because of this. It is not the sort of book I can send back, I doubt if I could lift it down to the post office to send it back. So it will remain and now with a little bit of tape so the damage doesn't get any worse, annoying when it is 70 odd quid ... it should be in mint condition. I wish A. would re-add their package comments as I have a lot of issues with it of lateThe Story was fine, interesting characters, lots of weird deviants and more. The cosmic Hulk ... really, why was that included ?? And spread over three issues. Back page says Eternals 1 - 11, actually 1-19

Long overdue release...
Wow, Marvel really do like to take their time, especially when it comes to Kirby's later work. DC appear to have more respect for Kirby than Marvel, which is a shame. Anyway, that's my little gripe. It is great that this graphic novel of the Eternals run from the70s is finally back in print. I remember getting a few copies of the Eternals as a kid, but then we relied solely on newsagents - so nothing was guaranteed and an actual comic shop was a pipe dream! Kirby was a master and well before his time, but he built so many foundations and DC especially has re-written much of its recent history on Kirby's Fourth World Chronicles. His artwork is astounding and Kirby is one of those few visionaries who you'd love to be open up his head and look in to see what was inside and how it worked! I bet there were even more worlds in there he never got round to exploring and sharing with us all. But we are lucky enough to have The New Gods and The Eternals amongst his many creations. The Eternals appear to have their origins with the Incas, a mystical race who were supposed to be technologically ahead of their time. This harnesses that mythology and delivers superb art and a panoramic storyline. Excellent to see this in print again!

Great nostalgia.
I remember the delight and awe that came with reading Kirby’s 4th World Series. It has lost none of it’s sense of wonder. It is, however, showing it’s age. Really pleased to see the reprint(s). Gaiman did it as well if not better.

Fun but dated
Liked it as an introduction to the eternals but as I progressed through the pages I began to dislike the writing style. It is archaic to say the least. Then again it was written in a different era than today. 👎🏿

How Kirby's "The Eternals" should be read. Epic... in every way.
The Eternals was something completely new to me. I had never read it and never heard anyone I personally knew who had. But after watching a couple of YouTube reviews of the book, I took the plunge and bought it, being a fan of this oversized series known by different names... "king size", "monster size", etc.Simply put: This is how Kirby's "The Eternals" should be read. Epic in every way.Quality from the front cover to the back. While there is a typo on the back cover (states it collects issues 1 to 11, actually 1 - 19), the quality of this book is tremendous. The binding is solid. The margins are nice and wide. The paper is thick, though a bit too reflective for my taste. And Marvel has really done well in restoring Kirby's original line art; it doesn't suffer from being overly pixelated as some of the other volumes do. Even the recoloring is great (I typically HATE modern recoloring).I'm not giving away any of the story. Just know that as you turn the pages and read this, you are really treated to Kirby's highly underestimated genius. Yes, we all know of his legendary art skills. But his writing really shines in this. It's serious at times, funny at others, but thoughtful always. I read 90 pages in my first sitting! But the most important point I would like to put here at the end: This way, at this size, is the way The Eternals should be read. As you flip the pages and encounter the Celestials, there's a nearly automatic sense of awe you get that really adds to the depth and connection you feel with the story. (The only other time I sensed such an intense and nearly automatic awe was being around massive statues in a Buddhist monastery in the Far East.) For example, the size of Arishem holding up his hand in his the first spread looks absolutely fearful... which is exactly how Kirby surely wanted the reader to feel. That's saying something. Not every king-size book is equal. Speaking as a huge Ditko fan, "Ditko is... Strange" took full advantage of the format and works well. However, the Spider-Man volume didn't, since it's composed of more fine details (smaller panels, tighter / more compact compositions). Kirby's work looks absolutely suited for this MONSTER size. Dynamic and powerful in every way.I hope to get "Kirby Returns" too, based on how good this volume was.Disclaimer: I purchased my copy at my own an expense and was not influenced in any way by any company in the writing of this short review.

Wow! Just Wow!
This truly massive book is an awesome sight to behold, and would be a great value at twice the price. The only downside is trying to find a place to put it. Too large for any standard bookshelf, yet this beauty demands to be displayed! As far as the comics themselves, it's seventies Kirby. Don't ask, just buy it!

Un clásico
Un clásico que debe ser un esencial para todo fan de Jack Kirby y del universo Marvel. El softcover llegó sin envoltorio de plástico, pero de suerte no estaba maltratado.
