Mary Magdalene (2019)

Too many still believe that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. This shows--with gorgeous cinematography and amazing music--the last part of the life of Jesus from the perspective of a woman. Yup, that is Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus Christ...takes a short time to get over that, but it is an interesting portrayal. (That portrayal is a bit too Gnostic for my beliefs, but I can let that go. Jesus was fully human, too.) This moves SLOW, so those who must have lots of fast action will not enjoy it. If you can ponder and admire beauty, this is a good film for you.

My husband and I were looking for a Biblical movie to end our Easter Sunday. We ordered the movie Mary Magdalene with hopes of adding to our spiritual experience. We were very dissatisfied and disappointed within the first 5 to 10 minutes. It was not Biblical at all. Jesus was 33. Mary had 7 demons cast out her. The movie took too many creative liberties. I didn’t want to give it one star but the review defaults Are mandatory. I request a refund.

I absolutely LOVE Joaquin Phoenix and have been a fan of his for 20 years! When this movie came out I was so excited to see him in this role! He did not disappoint! This movie is so beautiful and is truly a peice of art! The acting is superb! It really was a great refresher to such an old and stale story. I bought this without knowing wherever or not it was going to work in my DVD player, since it’s banned in the US. However, my lord and savior Joaquin came through and it works beautifully!

Mary was NOT the central figure in the life of Christ. So much truth left out. They made it seem like no one would know who Jesus is if it weren't for Mary. It has the pace of a drug-induced coma. Regardless of what the church decided in 2016, Mary was not the 13th disciple, nor Jesus girl friend.

What an excellent movie. I am impressed with all the actors.

i wanted it to be good but it was way off ... how? 1) makes mary magdalene into some sort of 'advisor' to Jesus regarding woman's rights, when the truth is that Jesus always respected women and didn't need someone to point this out 2) joaquin phoenix who plays Jesus falls flat, due partly to how the writers made him say weird things like he was trying to discover he was Jesus or something when Jesus knew His purpose ... this made Jesus into some kind of new age guru guy 3) it moves slow .... sloooooooooooooow, like walking through mud 4) unfortunately it's hard to make anyone stand out next to the real Jesus ... sorry but Mary Magdalene, Peter, etc. are not the stars of the good news from God, Jesus is. That said, this COULD HAVE been done right with better writing ... but it seemed like the writers settled on trying to make Mary Magdalene some kind of women rights hero and put her into some kind of right hand of Jesus place ... the real person who championed womens rights was Jesus and there are many examples of that ... Mary Magdalene, the Samarian woman, Mary and Martha, his own mother, etc. Ultimately the movie makers didn't really understand Jesus or even Mary Magdalene ... shame because i ordered the movie hoping they could pull it off ... but they didn't.

Look, we weren't there 2000 years ago. But Mary Magdalene was given a bum wrap by Pope Gregory and the RCC. This film tries to exonerate Mary with a very plausible explanation of her story, and her relationship with Jesus.

Excellent film that portrays the relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ.I did not see it in the theater, as planned. I'm sorry for that, as the cinematography is outstanding.What I found most thought provoking was the relationship Mary had with her family of origin. I had not given much thought to how difficult it would have been for a woman, alone, to join up with the Apostles and serve Jesus. The personal cost to her would be devastating to both men and women. even today.For so long, this woman has been an enigma to those who believe and worship Jesus. What has always haunted me, was it was she to whom he revealed himself first. What an honor! Yet, she is portrayed in such poor light. Was she a prostitute? Was it her castigation from her family that gave her this title?This film is a tremendous achievement. I'm glad I challenged myself to watch it.

Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix and Chiwetel Ejiofor deliver excellent performances in this film about the (untold) story of Mary from the village of Magdala during the period of Judea, 33 AD.Albeit this is a story about Mary which has never been shown on film before, it is superseded by the part of Jesus played by Phoenix and the storyline leaves you with much questioning about the Bible and the teachings of the Catholic Church.Phoenix has yet played the best-ever and most realistic Jesus among the 20 films or more i have viewed about Jesus!He portrays a conflicted, sad, angry and scared Jesus, from his days of teaching to the crucifixion.And I daresay, if you watch this film immediately after viewing Joker, well, you're in for quite a shocking experience.

una narrazione “poetica” che non vuole allontanarsi dai vangeli ma preferisce soffermarsi su alcuni temi spirituali che ritroviamo nella figura di Maria Maddalena, che possiamo ritrovare in noi stessi. Uno tra tutti, la capacità di vedere col cuore, di leggere nell’animo umano e essere pronti ad Amare, senza invece lasciarsi prendere dalla paura attraverso calcoli della politica e del potere.

Un punto di vista diverso su Gesù e sulla sua missione. Nel rispetto dei vangeli. Ben curato sotto ogni punto di vista. Invito a riflettere perché la nostra Chiesa ha la capacità di recuperare lo spirito delle origini.
