Ecology

I liked the fifth edition of Bowman & Hacker's Ecology very much ! I want to comprehend the global ecological system of the biosphere and physical and chemical environment - while energy and nutrient fluxes in living systems are unidirectional, in ecosystem only energy flows in a single direction with a portion of it lost as heat,but nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur cycle between living matter and physical environment. I contemplate over the question why there exist relatively invariant concentrations of oxygen (20%) and nitrogen (70%) in the atmosphere and why the salinity of ocean waters varies in narrow limits, 3.3 - 3.7 % - the Gaia hypothesis ? Very satisfied

I had to purchase this book for a summer ecology course I decided to take. I have a master's degree and have experience doing research in the sciences, and so far this is an excellent book. Several paragraphs into Chapter 1, I was hooked. The authors kick off their intro to the science of ecology with a contemporary and extremely relevant example of the interconnectedness of organisms and life processes. In discussing this example, they provide an elegant intro to concepts of the scientific method and controlled experimentation in a way that is approachable for the undergraduate reader.
