will it work with the 2020 MacBook Air

I can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t. I have the 2019 MacBook Pro and it works fine with that.

does this adapter have to be connected to a charger in order to work ? or can you use it without needing a charger

No it doesn't need a charger to work. You can still charge your Mac book whilst using it by using the top port, or simply use a port on the other side.

I have an audio interface that will require the thunderbolt port in the adapter - can i use the usb-c port to charge my laptop or is it only for data?

Only the first usb c port(close to hdmi port) support the charging function.
