Q: is this a hard wire unit i see three wires out the bottom of the box for 110 ac

Yes it is simple hard wired unit into your electrical panel. However the unit is one of the best and most dependable irrigation controllers on the market today. I installed my Rain Dial on a 3 valve irrigation system in 2002 and never had a problem with the unit. My advice is to buy the RD600 6 station irrigation system.

Q: Are these units smrt logic® compatible?

Not unless you are a hacker willing to add some component that enables such capability. This is pretty much an electro-mechanical controller, set and forget for a basic job of turning on a set of water valves for lawn watering.

Q: What adapter are they referencing in the customer review from Sept. 7, 2012? Do we need to purchase that also for a replacement installation? Thanks.

If it is the rain senor, you really don't need it and it is not required to install the controllrer

Yes it can be instAlled in sunlite. Best to protect from weather if possible
