Pierce Brosnan returns as James Bond in the superspy's 18th official big screen outing. When a British warship is destroyed in Chinese waters, Bond is dispatched to prevent the outbreak of World War Three. He discovers that the superpowers are being manipulated by ruthless media tycoon Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce), and sets about enlisting the help of Carver's attractive wife, Paris (Teri Hatcher).

A Thriller With Action
The film is a captivating thriller with much action, keeping you engrossed. During this phase of the franchise, there's a heightened focus on plot and character development, moving away from the campy Bond of the past and integrating a more modern context, which resonates with the current world. The themes of societal trajectory and the influence of media conglomerates feel pretty relevant even today. The film may not be the best in the series, but the story is worth watching.

The Peak of Piers....
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this film again on DVD, having not watched it since its original cinema release. Having re-watched all the Bond films chronologically over the past few months, I have to say this is certainly the best film of the Brosnan era - and arguably the best Bond film since The Spy Who Loved Me.Packed with memorable scenes & breathtaking SFX, it's a real classic. I especially love the radio-controlled BMW, which Bond deftly controls from his adapted mobile phone whilst in the back seat in a prolonged escape sequence - one of the most highly-charged & entertaining Bond stunts ever. As with other PB Bond films, there are some spirited 'Bond Girls', not to mention a wealth of bonus features on this DVD, including an entertaining & witty commentary by the man himself.A pity this would be Bond-veteran Desmond Llewellyn's final outing as Q, as he died in a car crash just a few weeks after the film's UK release. Poignantly then, we do get to see a proper handover to his (short-lived) replacement John Cleese, as Q his ushers him in & literally waves us goodbye.

Great bond adventure!
I think it's an excellent Bond adventure ! Brosnan is effortlessly cool as always and is for me the best Bond (Moore is my second fav). I think this is his best performance as Bond, even though I think he was great in all his films.Yeoh is also brilliant and beautiful and she too is super-cool. Add in the fact that she did lots of her stunts herself, then you have a very convincing Bond girl (she's also from the Chinese Intelligence in this film).I personally think that Pryce is a great villain ! He may not be as menacing as Sanchez but then that's not the point of him... He's a megalomaniac looking for coverage rights of a war he's looking on starting, he's a different kind of villain (in my mind). Some of the speeches he does are fantastic, and I love the "there's no news, like bad news" line.Plus, we have, albeit for a very short amount of time, the unforgettable Dr Kaufman !All in all, a great Bond adventure with all the elements to make any Bond fan extremely happy (like me !)

Media mogul threatens Bond...??
The second outing for Pierce Brosnan as Bond is not as re-defining as his debut was, but taken as an action picture, or as the 18th movie in the Bond series, and it is still a top movie. The opening pre-credit sequence sets the tone for the whole film. Explosions...lots of them. And some incredibly cool action moments, plus a brilliant introduction to our leading spy hero.Jonathon Pryce plays villain duty this time - a media mogul threatening war so he can have the headlines. Although Pryce is all menace and civilised brutality, his character and the plot is really quite absurd.Still, it ensues with plenty of fantastic action set pieces, not least a claustrophobic car chase in a car park that uses a large number of gadgets, and a frantic motorbike chase with Bond and the Bond girl, Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh) handcuffed together! The film barely pauses for breath as we travel from Germany to the Far East in the hunt for a stealth boat, but the stunts are numerous. The halo jump out of a plane is phenomenally shot, really giving a sense of height, and the motorbike jump across a helicopter is so good I wanted to rewind and watch it again!Brosnan, in my opinion, is the best Bond of all, and here he really relishes the role. Tough and violent, he still gives the chracter a charm and twinkling eye that only he can pull off. His interaction with Q is great fun to watch, and he is fully believable in the role. The DVD extras, however, pale in comparison to other Special Edition Bond films. We don't get a in-depth documentary this time, instead the DVD makers have plumped for a made for TV Bond documentary that doesn't focus solely on Tomorrow Never Dies, and so doesn't go into the kind of detail we have expected in previous Bond films. We still get the usual bunch of music videos and trailers, an interview with the music composer, and a text based featurette on Bond's gadgets. None of the extras were riveting, but the film is well worth the price alone.
