Not all that it appears to be.
I saw a write up for this book in Entertainment Weekly and the sample that they showed looked really cool. My husband loves maps and geography, so I purchased it with him in mind. While the book itself is cool, it isn't really maps of the world. Let me explain by citing some examples. There is a section called the Cultural Map of Cultural Intervention. There is another called the Speciation of Religion. This is all very interesting, but if you are looking for an atlas of the continents, you may be disappointed. My husband assures me that he enjoys reading this book, and it is pretty cool, just not what I originally had pictured.

Awesome ART
Sorry, but the people reviewing the book here are a bit dull. It's an amazing book of interpretive art by a collection of fascinating contemporary artists and their take on "mapping" and "cartography." It's not supposed to be an actual atlas. π

this give a very good grounding in those working within the science
Mapping is a very contemporary dialogue in the arts, this give a very good grounding in those working within the science, sociology and artistic communities which use the term mapping.

Dissappointing
I saw this book in Entertainment Weekly and it looked very interesting. Apparently the only interesting parts were the couple of maps that were shown in the magazine. The rest of the book seemed, to me, more like the ramblings of a schizophrenic artist. My warning is that tis book is not what you would think. Most of it isn't really maps and facts of anything, just doodles and hard to read opinions. One of the pages is just a photocopied doodle on a Best Western scrap paper, like you would find beside your phone in a rented hotel room........ I am going to return my copy.

I suspect many will buy this expecting a collection of maps and will be surprised and disappointed by the actual content
This was well reviewed in an entertainment magazine recently. But be clear, the title of this book is misleading. This is NOT an atlas and does not contain any cartography. This is a collection of modern art, some of it vulgar. I suspect many will buy this expecting a collection of maps and will be surprised and disappointed by the actual content, much of which is nothing more than photos of child-like doodling on random pieces of paper.

Ideal gift for light reading
I purchased the book as a Christmas present for my girlfriend, an enthusiast of maps and geography.Though not necessarily a cartographile (hm..) myself, I appreciated the book as much as she did, and would say it's a great gift if you're looking for something intriguing, different and beautiful.Only four stars because of the slight breaking down of distinction between a map and a diagram; that might seem miserly, but the book moves between very satisfying maps (the distance from the power centre of a Mexican drug cartel being a highlight) and things that are more like spider diagrams or flow charts, and a five star rating would have to have been given only to something that is consistently fascinating.Would definitely recommend, although it may not necessarily change your life.
