Freaky Friday

The original. The Best
A terrifically fun family film with more subtext and issues than any of its remakes. The Blu-ray for this film is incredible mainly for the way the colors are better than in any other release of the film. Sadly there are no commentaries from its stars (the amazingly talented Barbara Harris having passed away in the past couple of years) or any documentaries about the making of the film, which would have made this Blu-ray essential. But for anyone who is a fan of the film, it's never looked so good.Does the film hold up all these years later? Definitely. Jodie Foster is always good and Barbara Harris is superb. It wasn't until adulthood then I realize just how good John Astin is in this movie. As a child I saw him sort of as a dad who just doesn't pay attention. As an adult one can see just how much everything his wife says to him about his daughter he's bothering him. It's subtle and just fantastic. He also has always known how to play humor, knowing exactly when less is more.Teens today may find this "boring" or "old fashioned" but adults will pick up on the things they never noticed when watching this as a child. Innuendo and subtext that were jettisoned completely from the remake.Credit must also go to Gary Nelson, the director who keeps the film at a bouncy frothy pace throughout. He went on to direct the most serious "The Black Hole" for Disney. But this is his Jewel. This is the film that still gets referenced on sitcoms and other movies. At the time it was advertised as just another Disney comedy like the Kurt Russell comedy films. But it's definitely a movie that adults can enjoy too.Mary Rogers script improves on the book she wrote on which it is based, by showing what the mother goes through in the daughter's body. In the book the entire story is told through the eyes of Annabelle only.Mary Rogers was it the originator of the body switch idea. There's an old book called the Vice Versa, and an old movie version of that with Peter Ustinov I would kill to see. There are moments of it on YouTube but I've never been able to find the film. One more thing: the opening song "I'd Like To Be You For A Day" and it's accompanying cartoon, set the mood perfectly for the film. Hoping someday that the Johnny Mandel score will be released on CD, like his Escape To Witch Mountain was released. And one note on that: a piece of the score in this film is actually reused (and or reorchestrated) from a Dick Van Dyke film called Some Kind Of Nut.

Freaky Friday an iconic treat for Jodie Foster fans
Freaky Friday plays more like a Disney Sunday Movie for TV than a theatrical release, but hey - that was what the studio used to pump out in the mid-seventies. This Blu-ray looks amazing on the whole, with rich, vibrant colors and fine detail popping as it should. Matte process shots are transparently obvious with a lot of color fading and amplification of grain. A bit more color correction for these brief 'trick' shots would have helped. We don't get it here. This disc looks just fine, though and will likely satisfy most.

Worst DCOM in years.
I generally love DCOMs, and I found this one to be utter rubbish. Each of the 13 DCOMs before this (everything from 2013 onwards) have been far better than this one, so I would highly recommend you avoid wasting your time on this one. (Several older ones are lovely too, of course, but I haven't seen all of the pre-2013 ones, I can't accurately judge). This was a very poor attempt at remaking the old Freaky Friday movies. The characters were not compelling, and were extremely poor storytellers. The acting was subpar, the singing and dancing even worse. As an avid Disney Channel fan, I'm shocked at the poor quality of this movie. When compared to several wonderful other DCOMs, this film was truly appalling, particularly when just earlier this year they came out with Zombies (an excellent musical -- great singing, choreography, conveying a great overall message -- plus the zombies were not one bit scary), and have been churning out Descendants movies (all-around masterpiece -- brilliantly creative storyline, fantastic acting and singing, and great set and costume design). Even the less popular recent DCOMs have been worth watching and re-watching. In contrast, I could barely get through this once.

The 4 stars are for the film, me and my daughter absolutely love it. But I ordered the dvd assuming as this is an British site that it would be fine. It wasn't. Did not work on my dvd player or xbox one. We waited a year for this to be available over here and now it is still can't have it. Can Amazon sell one we can watch.
