I first make a sample brew in a gallon jug, will this fit into a gallon jug or just large carboy?

It fits into a gallon jug but you need to squeeze two paddles when you put it in. However, for a gallon, I recommended to use, "The Whip Wine Degasser ". Mix-stie rod is too long to put inside 1 gal and more expensives.

this would be awesome for whirlpooling after the wort boils! how much heat can it take?

If you use it in wort that's more than 200F, it will definitely melt (mine did!). If you want to whirlpool hot wort, buy a stainless mixing rod instead.

right now I'm at work its at home but off of memory I would say 15 to 18 inches maybe even 20 inches I put it at the end of a drill and I was standing up while using it
