It Has Worked Flawless Right From The Start
I would not recommend this printer for envelopes or labels because it does not have a straight-path feed-through. If you open the door on the back, it displays an error message, Door Open. So that lack of feature is disappointing. It curves the paper around severely which is just fine for regular paper, however not a good situation for labels. It is OK for envelopes, if you only print a few of them now and then. It printed on Card Stock very well, once the parameter was changed to the thick paper setting. Otherwise it will leave residual toner behind which contaminates subsequent sheets, and the toner will not adhere properly. Once it is set correctly, it works very well. The print quality is very impressive. I went between line art, gray scale, photos, line drawings, and it auto-corrected for optimal graphics quality. Print quality is very impressive and surprising fast in both single sided mode and duplex mode, which by the way is very easy to setup. Overall, it’s a very easy printer to use. I like that. Some people complain that the toner costs 3 times as much, however it also prints 3 times as much, so the cost per sheet isn’t that expensive after all. Some of the problems others had reported were apparently corrected, because I didn’t have any problems at all. It has worked flawless right from the start.

Good performing printer for a good price on Amazon
Got this to replace my 14 year old Samsung printer that finally died. This is very fast and works well. There is the issue with HP that they must pick and arbitrary "purchase" date based on manufacture date. So when you go on link to check the warranty you find that HP says that some number of months have already expired. In my case it was 3 months worth. HP has a link that you are supposed to click to request a review and warranty adjustment to correct the issue. But that link was dead, so I had to open a support request and e-mail a copy of the invoice for the purchase. After about a week HP did finally adjust the warranty. So just be aware that you likely will need to do the same thing. This printer works very well with Linux using HPLIP. If you can get this model at a good price I would recommend it.

Good Value
My wife's Brother printer needed to be replaced. The printer had a second legal tray and was always a bit quirky. When the need for the legal tray ended, she wanted a new printer that duplexed, i.e. prints on both sides of the paper. After a fair amount of research I settled on the HP 402dn. She has used for a few months now and loves it. Happy wife, happy life. The set up is simple, it is quiet, fast, and does an excellent job of duplexing. HP does not mention the flash blue light which seems to on all the time. When the light is flashing, the printer is asleep.

Very fast monochrome duplex printer - handles legal size; annoying lighthouse beacon
This is my forth hp laserjet printer, and by far the lightest and smallest (I bought my first laserjet model II, in 1990, and it cost $2000!) It replaces an hp 2055dn, which unfortunately had started smearing pages, probably due to a bad fuser unit. Unfortunately, it is cheaper to upgrade than face the expense and uncertainty of fixing the old one (fuser unit costs $110-190!). This new unit performs well. I set it up to be "IT Managed", so it won't auto-update (a.k.a auto-break) its software over the internet. I set the IP address manually to match the old printer, and then just started printing. I didn't have to change any print drivers on our macs. I have printed single sided and duplex using print dialog settings with no problem, and have tested OSX 10.6 (snow leopard) and OSX 10.8 (mt. lion). Once it is on the network, you manage it via its built-in web interface, just like the older models. It has lots and lots of options, but I just set the IP address. (You set the management mode from the control panel when it first boots up). One nice surprise is that this one handles legal-size paper; the old 2055dn did not. Very fast! Finishes printing short jobs before I can walk over there. Mostly use this printer for dumping documentation, and so speed is important. It comes with the basic toner cartridge, which I believe is good for about 3,000 pages. One annoyance, as others have noted, is the flashing beacon when it is in sleep mode. It is a bright white light, and flashes like a traffic signal. You can see it from outside my house at night! It could even help burglars find the loot in the dead of night, so good job HP designers! Solved for now by covering the bright LED in the switch with sticky notes. I don't advise using electrical tape, because the adhesive might eventually impact the operation of the switch. I guess you could lean a clipboard in front of it, or maybe paint over it, or get creative with stickers. Other than this human factor design error, happy to have a lighter, faster, more capable, inexpensive, plug replacement printer, especially with the new school year coming up. :)

Easy setup with OSX and great output.
Set up with our two iMacs (OSX 10.13) was simple and quick... nothing to download and the printer appeared instantly in the printer set-up window. The printer is connected by Ethernet to our XFinity router. When a print job is sent to the printer while it's in ”sleep” mode, it takes maybe 2 or 3 seconds for the printer to wake up and another 3 seconds to complete the first page. Printing is unbelievably fast and the clarity of the output is perfection. This printer replaced a 20 year old HP LaserJet 6MP that still worked perfectly after 23,000 pages, but required an HP Jet Direct 300x print server to connect to a modern network. The connection between OSX 10.13 and the Jet Direct was becoming unreliable so it was time to modernize.

Good for Polar Bears, not so much for the user.
I purchased this thing to replace a M401 dn that worked flawlessly for years until the duplexer broke on using some heavy stock paper. I bought this thing, set it up on the Ethernet network, and it is connected as are a Brother mulitpurpose laser scan-fax-printer, an Epson wide-format inkjet printer, and a Cannon six-cartridge ink-jet printer. However, unlike the M401dn this LaserJet M402dn will go into sleep mode if not used and you absolutely cannot wake it up out of it unless you (1) use the menu on the printer and select a configuration report which causes it to come out of sleep mode and start printing again for a while or (2) you manually unplug the 110V cord and plug it in again which also makes it available again. The On/Off button on the front of the M402dn will not take it out of sleep mode. I am thinking of returning it tomorrow, I called HP support tonight with no results. Only thing to show for me consulting HP support on this product is an Email. No help available -- it should be. Prints nice, probably cost effective, but this Econo Mode might be good for polar bears but not for productivity!

So far it is excellent. Toner cartridge replacement cost is high. But for our office, the product works very well.
I replaced a 9 year old HP 2015d laser printer. This new printer has so far been excellent. It is as fast if not faster. It prints double sided. It fits on my desk near the computer. It was easy to install (just insert the cd that came with it and follow directions). I purchased the 3 year extended warranty just in case so that I don't have worries. We run a small 2 person tax preparation office and print tax returns. So far a few weeks with no problems. The toner replacement is expensive but later on maybe more generic/refilled toner brands may start to have the HP 26A or HP 26X cartridges. I am very satisfied so far with the product.

Excellent printer for the price!
Purchased this printer for our business and my coworker is very happy with the performance. It is relatively quiet and it has not given us any jamming problems. It was very easy to install and compact enough to place it on top of a desk. If you are looking for a good quality sturdy built printer then stop looking and purchase this one. We received the printer promptly it was securely packaged as well. This is an awesome buy and replacement for the old printer that we had that kept jamming constantly. We need something that is reliable that can print continiously, we worked in a fast pace environment, efficiency is needed and we can definitely count on this product.

Great workhorse
This HP LJ Pro M402dn laser printer is a great workhorse. I expect this printer to last many years as it's built solid and prints quite quickly compared to the HP LJ 4+ it is replacing. I highly recommend it for large volume printing.

Great double-sided printing!
With the reviews I had read, I was a little worried about purchasing this printer, but the price was right and I am unfortunately governed by my budget. Much to my delight, it was easy to install on my Mac and works beautifully. It is quiet, gives me great quality double-sided documents, and is compact and nice to look at too. Very satisfied!

Printer wouldn't communicate with Mac through USB connection.
I read the reviews and was excited. These are the facts of my experience. 1. The user-manual was confusing, but I finally got the HP-M402dn connected to my Mac through USB connection, 2. Used the web link provided to install software since the CD only works for Windows, 3. Had to contact HP virtual web support since Mac could not detect printer, 4. HP virtual web support informed me this printer is no longer covered by warranty, 5. HP did a check and told me "card in printer has gone bad" (hardware defect), 6. I had to return defective printer to Amazon. I ordered a replacement and I will update this review with a higher rating if my experience with this printer changes. This is a summary of the facts regarding this HP printer at the current time.

Appreciation: HP LaserJet Pro M402dn Monochrome Printer,...
The printer is a great machine in terms of time efficiency and time saving. How I got it is a little bit of headaches. Received the first one but it failed to install the software on my PC. Contacted HP Canada and was told the printer's warranty had expired 2 months earlier. Returned it and received another one 2 days after. The installation process became another headaches, good enough my daughter is an IT girl, helped to troubleshoot and got the printer working perfectly. Few days later it couldn't print. Called HP and was told the warranty had expired also. However, they were able to extend it for one year. Overall, the printer is worthy the price and it makes a difference in terms of efficiency.

Another HP workhorse
Now passing 10,000 pages printed with minimal jams (3), no issues at all to report. Another HP workhorse. The toner that came with it printed 2800 pages even though I messed up and printed some images to the wrong printer that were essentially entire pages of ink. Still on the heavy duty ink cartridge. Thanks for not making junk HP.
