A Could Have Been
For people that love Vetttriano, any book which exhibits his paintings is appreciated. This one does more; it's a compendium of paintings with stories and poems that complement and paint word pictures to go along with his film noir vision of the world. I didn't give this a Five Star rating for two reasons: The small format does no justice to the paintings, which seeem claustrophobic in this size, and the selection of paintings featured did not exhibit any of his less seen works. Quite worth the money, but it could have been so much more...

Small
Small book, I could hardly enjoy the art... its also old, and poor quality.

Beautiful. 'nuff said.
What can I say? A book of Jack Vettriano photos. What could go wrong except a damaged book, and the seller shipped a book that exceeded my expectations at a great price. A treasure. A genuine treasure. If you don't know Jack Vettriano this is as good a place as any to start.

Fallen Angels - Risen Star
This book is a must for any one who enjoys Jack Vettriano's paintings. It includes around 40 reproductions of his paintings, including the famous 'The Singing Butler'. (Did you know that this painting is the World's favourite poster ?) To add to the images are stories, poetry, and song lyrics written by a host of Scottish writers. Vettriano's upbringing in the Italian quarter of Glasgow is very evident and really adds to the mood of his paintings. It works as a coffee table book, and for those who want to understand the culture that Vettriano identifies with. My only complaint is that it is a small paperback, and screams out to be a large hardback edition, but at its current price is an absolute bargain.

Tiddler of a book, but entertaining nevertheless!
Lovely little album, perhaps, not as grand and well presented as his other ones, but still good to have. Most prints are in larger and bigger albums, but this is a little reminder of Vettriano's greatness. Knowing what it is like I'd probably not buy this book, but having it here is nice too.

A Beautiful Introduction to Vettriano's Art
Vettriano is a controversial artist who attracts scorn from the artists' 'establishment', perhaps because his work is highly approachable by people who appreciate beauty and artistic quality without possessing an educated background in 'art'. His work has an immediate impact on the untutored eye, and it evokes a powerful, yet mysterious eroticism. This book is a small, but rich introduction to Vettriano's work, delightfully set into the context of Scottish poetry and prose extracts which complement the visual images, reinforcing their mystery. The words used are well chosen in this respect, encouraging the viewer to develop an independent view of the artist's intentions. The essentially Scottish quality of Vettriano's painting is significantly enhanced by Gordon Smith's talent in this. The book is an excellent introduction to the art, and will be appreciated by non-specialists as a joy to read, again and again.

WHAT IS THE SUBTEXT?
Very few people can view a Vettriano painting without questioning the subtext, irrespective of it's given title. In the similar manner of Hopper, they raise more questions than they answer, which probable accounts for Vettriano's niche in the Art World.Whatever the title or indeed its inspiration the viewer can interpret the underlying enigma through his own unique imagination. This delightful anthology, edited by Gordon Smith, originally published in 1994 presents some 44 works ,each with its own individual ekphrasis style interpretation by Vettriano's Scottish contemporaries, from a variety of artistic backgrounds.A must have addition to the library of any serious artlover
