Light weight, aerates the soil, improves drainage, and helps to keep soil moist.
I have been growing almost all of our veggies and herbs in my basement under LED lights for over 7 years. Although I use an excellent potting soil that contains perlite, humus, etc., most plants do better in a loamy soil. By definition, loamy soil contains sand. I tried adding sand to a couple of pots, and it very much increased the weight of the pots. In addition, most sand you can find is to fine to be of any help for drainage or aeration. Vermiculite serves the same purpose as sand, but is much lighter in weight. Vermiculite helps to lighten the soil and prevent it from compacting. Although vermiculite does hold some moisture, I also add coco coir to the soil which also lightens the soil, and holds moisture. This combination helps to keep the soil evenly moist, and allows better distribution of water when you water your plants. When your plants get too dry and you water until the water comes out the drainage holes, you assume you have thoroughly watered the plants. In actuality, the water runs through the soil without moistening it. Since vermiculite and coco coir absorb water more readily than soil, this combination helps to hold the moisture so the soil can slowly absorb it. Initially, I was buying 30 quart bags of vermiculite at a cost of $37, but I grow so much it was getting very expensive to use. I found this 103 quart bag of coarse vermiculite for about $20 more, so I decided to try it. This vermiculite comes in a huge bag, and will last me for a while. This vermiculite is very clean and the course has a mix of fine, medium, and course pieces. Since I had bought a 103 quart bag of the medium vermiculite, which has much smaller pieces, I decided to buy this bag mix them. This has been working out very well, and my plants seem to be happier. I like the variation of the piece sizes. In my opinion, the medium vermiculite looked more like fine and too small to do much good. From here on I will be buying only the course vermiculite. I hope this review was helpful for you.

Great value, good quality
Great value. Not too course, not overly fine. Worked well for making my own Mel’s Mix for raised beds.

Great find for a great price
Was looking for more for my money for a decent price cause I’m filling up some raised garden beds. And was pleasantly surprised with the amount I received at the price. Everywhere else locally was way more and you get way less. Looks like top quality stuff and can’t wait to start filling my beds.
