Crimson Peak: The Official Movie Novelization

Haunting, nimble, and masterful storytelling!
This book is exactly what I was hoping it would be : a beautiful, suspending experience in extending what the storytelling was from the film. The pacing is very fast, though never rushed, the vocabulary and prose is lyrical and spellbinding, and the mood and development of the work really shine in such a dark, macabre setting. It was also a very, very fast read despite its length, since it is so compelling and difficult to put down. A ghastly read!

great read
The book was a great read. Tells of the true feelings of each character that makes it so easy to read. Very suspenseful and a page turner.

Not what I expected, and that's okay!
I was becoming impatient to see the movie, so I thought maybe I'd give the novelization a try. I'm both surprised and disappointed by what I bought. The story was beautifully written, haunting, romantic, twisted, and dark. It was a book unlike any other I've read yet in my lifetime. Even though the ending was a huge disappointment to me based on what I was hoping for the ending, it was still such a good read. I'm happy I read it.

Movie in Book Format
Crimson Peak / B00VCZQ9U2This is exactly the sort of movie novelization that I have a huge soft spot for: like the movie, but now in luxurious book form! It's like buying a book about the costuming or sets because you just want to snuggle down and wallow in the movie a little longer. What I'm trying to say is that if you like Crimson Peak but thought "I wish this came in a convenient book form for me to enjoy even longer", then this book is for you. This novel is pleasantly written and very competently done. (I've read a lot of movie novelizations and I know quality can vary; this is one of the high-end jobs and well done.) There were a couple of early details that annoyed me--Edith's eyes are clearly a warm honey brown in the movie (and go perfectly with her yellow dresses) but for some reason the novel made them blue, and there is a little bit of an annoying "not like those OTHER girls" attitude at the beginning where Edith disdains balls and dancing, which was not something I got from her in the movie--but after the first couple chapters everything settles down nicely into repeating the same movie beats but with more interiority from what Edith is thinking, which was precisely what I wanted. There is the same focus on lush color as in the movie, and I like that it was translated onto the page because the visuals were such an important part of the story.I guess the only other thing to note here is that if you didn't like Thomas in the movie, you may not love his treatment here. The movie left it ambiguous, I thought, as to how much responsibility he shares with his sister in their plots and intrigues; the book makes it abundantly clear that Lucille is the driving force who gets her hands dirty for all the murders while Thomas is another of her victims being dragged along for the ride. This was different from how I'd personally interpreted the movie, but it works well here and it's nice to see a narrative take sibling abuse seriously, because what Lucille has done to Thomas is never down-played as appropriate or okay.Long story short: If you loved the movie and just want more details and Easter Eggs in book form, this book absolutely delivers in a good way.~ Ana Mardoll

one of the most beautifully written books i've read
Crimson Peak is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I grabbed this book as soon as I could after watching it. I originally only watched the film because my best friend and I are going through Tom Hiddleston's entire film list, but it was so much better than I was expecting! I'm actually kind of glad that the book is based on the film because I didn't have a reason to be disappointed with either since they're both so similar.Holder's writing is beautiful, which only adds to how beautiful the story itself is (in a twisted way, of course). I'll definitely pick up more books written by her because it was just so easy to lose myself in her writing. I couldn't put this down until I finished it, which took me about three hours that morning; that's the quickest I've ever read a book!Thomas Sharpe is one of my favorite fictional characters - not even just because of Tom; that's just an added bonus. My point is that my favorite thing about the novelization is Thomas's realization about his entire life. I picked up on this in the film as well, but we actually get more of his feelings in the book. Don't get me wrong, Tom did great with this, but it was just emotional to actually read it for me.There are so many things I want to say about this book, but I don't even know how to start with half of it. This is one of the most twisted, truly sickening stories I've ever read, and Nancy Holder executed it perfectly. If you've watched the movie, you absolutely have to read this! Even if you hadn't, I highly recommend this one if you enjoy creepy books!

Wow. Just wow
If you like the movie, read this book. It gives the reader the insights into so much more; the ghosts, the house, the internal workings of Eunices mind. It's a truly wonderful book, full of details and expressions that may have been shown on film, but without a doubt, unmistakable in literary form.

Bom livro mas nada demais.
O livro não dá grandes ou maiores informações além do filme, como promete. Se você assistiu já teve a experiência completa.

A novelisation that follows Victorian standards
After some reflections and reading these reviews on Amazon I decided to get a copy of this novel. It is not a surprise to me that a "novelisation" of the film 'Crimson Peak' is a novel that only repeats the conversations out of this very film, as some others already have criticised...But my thoughts on this book are completely positive. The author writes about typical Victorian subjects which came up in this exciting century: the industrialisation is subject (as in the film, of course), the development of the women's independency (motif of the New Woman/Girl), the pros and dangers of marriages based on financial grounds/love, and of course the horror, ghosts, magic. She fills in some thoughts of the protagonists as well, and that makes the reading experience more complete. This novel seems as it had been written in the 19th century, only with a few modern interpretations of todays world. In comparison there can be found some similarities to successes in literature of the 19th century, for example Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre', as the protagonist from that novel, the novelist Edith Cushing is an orphan who wants to marry only for love, feels herself drawn to an enigmatic man, and gets entangled into a web of her own phantasy and the mysteries that are surrounding her.Anybody can decide for him-/herself but I found this piece of literature quite enjoyable.
