Comprehensive overview of 1930s and 1940s British bomber and attack aircraft designs
The content in this book was included in the same volume by Tony Buttler (published in 2004) as the overview of British fighter designs (built or unbuilt) conceived in the 1935-1950 period. However, newly discovered documents and drawings prompted Buttler to revise and split the 2004 book into two volumes, one on fighters and one on bombers and ground attack aircraft. While the Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, Short Stirling, Armstrong Whitworth Whitley, Handley Page Hampden, Fairey Barracuda, Blackburn Skua, Short Sunderland, Bristol Beaufort, Vickers Wellington, and Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle are well-documented in the literature on British combat planes of WW2, BSP4 covers many British bomber and naval strike aircraft projects of the 1935-1940 period that never left the drawing board or lost out to other designs at the design or prototype phase. Chapter 5 of this book stands out because it contains a number of giant bomber projects that did not proceed beyond the drawing board, including the 172-ft span Vickers 'Victory Bomber' and bizarre designs for giant bombers with canards and wings; as a matter of fact, the UK never deployed a large bomber in WW2 comparable to the B-29, B-32, and B-36 in terms of wingspan. Moreover, Chapter 2 contains never-before-published info on British studies for composite aircraft, and the last chapter of this book contains early British jet bomber designs, including jet-powered derivatives of the Mosquito and Buckingham. Appendix 1 is a directory of all wartime British bomber and attack aircraft projects, while Appendix 2 discusses RAF and RN requirements for new British wartime bomber and attack aircraft projects, and Appendix 3 covers wartime bomber and ground attack aircraft contracts.
