I didn't know the handles weren't coated, or plastic, either, so I immediately went out and bought a can of varnish and dipped and painted them with varnish to help lengthen their use. Didn't help preserve them much, since you are always washing paint brushes, and water penetrates wood so easily. Get what you pay for, I guess.
