Nate the Great

We love these!
These aren’t new, I loved the stories of the kid detective, and now my son loves them too. They are short, sweet, and it’s always a clever little mini mystery. I would recommend for a 1st or 2nd grade to self-read or as a read-together book. An older kid might still like these but they are ideal for an early independent reader. We love books and we recommend you give these a try!

reading level
I am very familiar with this book I have read it as a kid myself and now I was able to purchase it for my son. It is an appropriate young age level reading book. The letters are large but not to large, just the perfect size to almost make it seem like more of a chapter book but comfortable enough for a 1st grader to confidently read. I would highly recommend the story of Nate The Great to children and parents all over.

Hilarious children's book in verse
"Nate the Great" is, in a word, great. In Nate the Great, Marjorie W. Sharmat has created a hero for young boys. He acts very independently, walking around the neighborhood by himself, making his own pancakes, etc. but he wears his rubbers, and he *always* leaves a note for his mother. Marc Simont really comes through in his laid-back illustrations (some shaded, some in color) that reveal important points of the case, but do not force things down the readers' throats. Also, like the writer, Simont manages humor without going overboard. As in the best children's books, the writing style is simple yet powerful, like a haiku. Although the "Nate the Great" series is written in full sentences, Sharmat has slyly created a wonderful introduction to poetry-that-doesn't-rhyme with his carefully placed line breaks and page breaks. Here is the first page of text: "My name is Nate the Great. / I am a detective. / I work alone. / Let me tell you about my last case: / I had just eaten breakfast. / It was a good breakfast."The first book in the Nate the Great series is by far the best, because the funniest parts are in the character development that, of course, takes a back seat in later volumes. The establishing shots of and paragraphs talking about Nate, Annie, Fang, and Rosamond are absolutely hilarious. Continuity watchdogs will note Fang's slightly more menacing nature (and color change) and Annie's lost fascination for yellow in later books. Of course, kids won't notice or care. The official reviews don't make it clear which books in the series are actually in this volume. The cover is definitely not the original cover of book 1. You might want to look into that before buying. This series is great fun for little kids and whoever is lucky enough to be reading to them. Get all the Nate you can find!

Great first reader!
I have four boys - three of whom are old enough to read - and they have loved reading this series. You can read any of the books on their own, but why not start with this first, original story? The books are entertaining, and it's fun to try to solve the mystery as you read. I believe the newer additions may be divided into chapters, but originally these books were not. Either way, they are perfect for kids who have started reading on their own and are wanting to read a "chapter book." To me, this book is the perfect segue from picture books to chapter books. It's short enough to finish in a few days (early readers) or even just an hour or so (stronger readers). These books gave my kids a great sense of accomplishment in being able to read the whole thing all by themselves. I think that is priceless in boosting their confidence and interest in reading. I should also mention that while my boys loved these books, they would be great for girls also.

Fun book to read
My nephew and I enjoyed reading this book together. Fun story and I couldn’t help but read it in the voice of a 50’s film noir style detective which made it even more fun to read. I think we’ll probably read more Nate the Great stories.

Great book
Was looking for a book to move on from picture books, perfect choice. Simple vocabulary and plot but funny and interesting to young kids with lovely illustrations. My 4yo and 2yo loved it, I’m ordering more in this series.
