Is this diary genuine leather? If not, does the material last without peeling?

No it's not leather. But it's very hard wearing. I had one last year, for me it was great. So I purchased one for this year.

Is this diary small enough to fit into a small handbag? The description says it’s A5, however it looks much bigger in the pictures.

Yes the diary is only A5. It's very smart and there's lots of room to write your day to day activities. With a twelve hour time table so you can document appointments etc, for the day.
