Big and Small, Room for All

Great book, but...
What a GREAT book! Great idea. Entrancing illustrations!! And it's the first book my son 'engaged' enough to really start to focus on the words, recognize them, and anticipate them. Eventually recognizing and naming "Big" and "Small".But it has 2 drawbacks...I expected it to focus equally on the "room for all" theme, but it didn't :( But more disappointing was the ending....so I rewrote it.Book says:"What is smaller than a flea? A world of things too small to see." (has images of amoebas and cells, etc)"Big sky, Big sky, What is bigger than the sky? The never-ever-ending sky." (with a vague sort of cloudy-sky watercolor...(huh?))I rewrite it when reading it to my son as:"What is bigger than the sky? MANY worlds of things TOO big for us to see." Then I explain to him that all the little dots shown are planets as big as ours MANY miles away. All I could come up with, but it's better than "Never-ever-ending sky" IMHO!

Pleasant book with one flaw
A very simple book that's quite pleasing to read aloud about how your perception of size changes depending on what you're comparing the object to. Here's a sampling: (this is from memory so it might not be exact)"Big and small, big and small, room for all, big and small.Big Sun, small earth.Big earth, small mountain.Big mountain, small tree..."And it goes down from tree, to man, to child, to kitty, to mouse, to flea. The water color illustrations are gorgeous and my son enjoys this book. Since it's so simple, he's memorized it and recites it sometimes before he goes to bed to soothe himself. The only thing that really bothers me about the book is the last sentence. "Big sky, big sky, what is bigger than the sky? The Never ending sky." UGH! Isn't that like saying "What is bigger than the moon? The Moon!" I know it's a small thing but it's enough to bump this down to four stars in my book. Otherwise the book is excellent.

I love this book. The concept is very unique and the illustrations are beautiful and captivating. My son loves hearing me read this book over and over.

Not a 'must have' addition to the bookshelf but can help add diversity with realistic illustrations.
I enjoy parts of this book, some pages I find the colours a bit dull or the wording uninteresting. My one year old is slowly becoming more interested, especially in the flea picture. There are few interesting details in the illustrations of space, like the Pillars Of Creation. The only part I really dislike is the "Big Man/Small child" wording. I find it's inconsistent and I change the wording to "big adult".I don't love every page of this book, however, I find it's worth having as a board book for my son to flip through for the 2 space pages and the zoomed in flea. I wouldn't purchase as a paper or hard back.
