Q: Did they actually ruin the look of this bag by putting that huge "travel, share" patch on it? If so, can it be taken off?

MY bag is white so the patch does not really show. I suppose you could remove it.

Yes, I removed the label when I received it. There are no rips, tears or any indication that there was ever a label on it.

I measured the strap fully opened and it is 48" long.
