I did indeed, lol, more than once.
I had read this author before and enjoyed their work. To be honest, I was unsure at the beginning of this story as it veered toward the very bete noire of a Humphrey Bogart New Orleans 'private eye', but a female MC. I'm so pleased I stuck with it because it was cleverly written and challenged my preconceptions from the early chapters.Well worth your time.

It was okay.
My favourite K.F. breene series are: Demigods of san Francisco, Deliciously dark fairytales, and the warrior chronicles.I've tried a few others by the author, and they didn't hold my interest the way the above mentioned did. I've read this book once before during a slow day and it kept my interest but I didn't feel the need to continue...but I missed this Author's humor and found family dynamics so I thought is give it another try.Whilst I did laugh and wanted to know how it ended, I really struggled to finish it. I find the characters fine, but I'm not in love with any of them. I found that I was continuing to read because of the love I have for the other series by this author. So nostalgia kept me reading.I've been told it gets better, so I'll try to finish the first trilogy and see if it improves.

A must for PN/PNR readers
I have read quite a few of this authors book and I generally enjoy them, even though it's becoming frustrating that the longer the series goes on, the quality drops (not just this author is guilty of that). I read this when it first came out and thought I'd read it again to remind myself what the author does well.Reagan is a great flc. Those who've read my reviews will know I like smart, sarcastic, funny women, with a side of enjoyment in breaking doors down and the odd nose! This hits the mark. She isn't over the top and also doesn't come across as arrogant, which can be a tough line to walk. The author has also written her as being afraid in certain situations, which I like. It seems more natural - I realise in a PN book, this seems a daft thing to say but you know what I mean!)Even the overused trope of dead/missing mother and a mysterious father is well done, and you are kept guessing about parentage until at least halfway through which is unusual. The plot, again following some standard themes, is done in a way which still seems fresh. For example, a flc who doesn't fit in to any particular world but wants to have a 'normal' life and/or job.You also get the usual paranormal 'breeds', so to speak. However, the combination of how they are used and written with some differences is well done. The way the Brink and Realm worlds work is a bit of a slip but it doesnt hold the plot back.I generally struggle, even with excellent descriptions, to be able to picture chatacters and places in books, but I find Breene is one of the authors I can do it to some extent. In this case, it's the fight location at the end as well as Dizzy and Callie and their house/ mannerisms which work really well.As for the side characters, you can tell which ones will start appearing more (Red and Roger, and I think Penny gets her own stories but you'd need to check!). Dizzy and Callie are great, if a little over the top on occasion. However, some of the little details written, such as the shed situation and the cleaning up mud make them well rounded even in a short time. There's a promise of romance - and the person who it's with isn't a surprise, but it doesn't take over, giving the reader time to get to know the characters individually first, which I like.Looking at the number of pages, I was worried that it would be one of those books which is padded out for an extra 100 pages but actually, it doesn't feel long. You don't feel you have to skim pages to get to the next plot point.Overall, it's a great read if you already like this genre and also one that would be a good start for a newbie as well. It doesn't assume that the reader knows all about myths regarding vampires etc, but it also isn't over simplified and therefore patronising the reader. On to book two....

Loved it
Reagan is as quirky as she is powerful and she’s getting through life the only way she knows how; one pay check at a time. She’s a bounty hunter with a secret and it’s one she’ll have to work hard to keep when she takes a job she can’t afford to turn down.If you’re undecided on whether or not to give this series a go, I challenge you to read the sample and not want more. I may be a little biased as I’ve read other series by the author and have thoroughly enjoyed them but usually the first series/book I read by an author remains my favourite and yet this is fast becoming my favourite series by K.F. Breene to date. I love her imperfect characters, the sense of community she creates and the worlds in which it’s all based and ‘Born in Fire’ is no exception. Reagan – like Breene’s other heroines – is made more relatable by her quirks, even if they are a little extreme and rather unique to the character. It’s the little quirks though that make me love her, like; her inability to remember names, her propensity to lose her eyebrows, her inability to remain clean, her love of kicking in doors, etc. Normal is boring and Reagan is more than happy to embrace her inner crazy. Thankfully for her she lives on a colourful street in New Orleans where weird is wonderful, or at the very least expected. Her and a select group of her neighbours even band together to watch out for one another and watch over the cemetery in their neighbourhood. It’s hard not to like the odd group when they take pride in scaring tourists and wannabe witches away when they’re up to no good. Admittedly, that may not make much sense to you but once you read the book you’ll see why Reagan and her neighbours tickle me, since they are all as strange as one another. And while we’re talking crazy, Reagan picks up a couple of rather interesting side-kicks in the latter half of the book, and what they lack in conventionality, they more than make up for in knowledge and power. Now to Darius; an elder vampire and her reluctant partner. I’m not overly keen on Darius in this book, though I will admit that there are a few moments that make me think he may be redeemable. He’s certainly more likeable by the end of the novel than he is in the beginning and I’m not even being persuaded by the few steamy moments he and Reagan share. Or maybe I am. You’ll have to read and decide that for yourself.

Enjoyable but light
I prefer a bit more world building, deeper relationships or politics, bit this is a light-hearted feel good read for the beach.

Oh my Gosh! I am totally hooked on this series. I don't know why I waited so long to start this but seriously this book was amazing. It's filled with drama, loads of action, kick-ass sword fighting, magical battles, humor and some steamy tension. Really? What's not to love?
