This toy is a MUST for every young child.. and for parents!!
This toy is amazing. You'd think that something like this would be to complex for a toddler, but the leap pad gives very good vocal instructions to your child. Children as young as 3 really can do this all by themselves with No help, except maybe to change the book.(even younger would be ok if your child understand instructions and has good fine motor skills)The games are ALL educational and ALL fun!Your child wont get bored with the toy quickly because you can just buy new leap books. With the right assortment of books I really can see this toy playing a large part in a child learning to read. Of coarse there are books for much more than reading skills... pretty much anything you might expect on an early childhood curriculum. It is truely a learning tool; the second best only to one-on-one personal teaching. It also is great for fine motor skills and teaches your child to use the stylus with some control, which will help her write and draw better.Another thing you will get from this toy is quiet time. It can hold a child's attention very well... and you don't even need to stand right by them and help!As far as durability... It holds up to dropping, being stepped on, pen chewing and juice drinking. AND it doesn't even seem to use up the batteries very quickly. The only thing I can possibly think of to improve is that sometimes the computer doesn't give your child enough time to think and will just say "lets try again later" and they will have to push the "game" button again and not get to give their answer to the last question. Which is frustrating to children. They should double the time the computer gives your child.

Great Idea but more of an aggravation!!!
This toy has such great learning abilities if the construction of the toy was different. If you use the book that comes with this it is not a problem, but to change books you have to have a cartridge that is inserted into the right SIDE (the handle is on the left)and this cartridge sticks out about an inch. If your toddler even TOUCHES it, it shuts off. My daughter tends to use her left hand so she naturally grabs the right side and hence the total aggravation. For the amount of $ it is for this and the books, wait until they change the design!!

Good Toy, But Doesn't Hold Up to Toddler Use
I bought this toy for my two daughters, aged 2 and 4. After three months of use the unit intermittently wouldn't recognize the cartridges that we would plug into it. The problem got worse over time and now the pen works intermittently as well. My girls were never wild with it, never threw it against a wall or blatantly abused it, just normal toddler use. My First Leappad was fun while it worked, but my advice is to save your money and wait until your kids are old enough for the regular Leappad.

Fantastic Toy
We bought the My First LeapPad for our daughter over a year ago for her 3rd birthday. She is still playing with it. It is one of the few toys that have held her attention other than her play kitchen. She takes it everywhere that we go and she even sleeps with it, all this still after an entire year of playing. The pen that is used with the leap pad did stop working just recently and I called the company and they sent me another one free of charge no questions asked. Thats what I call service. I would recommend this toy to anyone who has small children. In fact I think that we are going to buy her the regular LeapPad for Christmas. The only thing that I don't like is that the My First LeapPad does not have a wide variety of books to choose from.

Son still plays with this after 1 year!
I really like My first leap pad and so does my 3 year old son. I bought it for him for Christmas last year (he was 2 1/2 then)and though some the activities we're alittle hard for him to start with, there were still plenty of things he could do with it.Every picture you touch the pen on says a frase/says the name of the object or make a sound,so even without playing the games he still had great fun with it. A year on,he can now play all the games on it and has recently noticed letters make words,so now he touches the words and the leap pad reads it for him,so he is still learning from this toy after a year! I will be buying more my first leap pad books for him this Christmas, this toy is worth every penny!

A Perfect Classic
I was looking all over for one of these. My youngest son would use the other LeapPads in the house, but some of them are a little advanced. This is the perfect thing to get your baby started off right. We received it in a timely manner and the item was just as expected.

Confusion
The product only worked on the book that came with it and not the ones I already have. Leap frog makes it very complicated to match books and products. There is a picture on the book that says it works on the blue My first leappad and it doesn't. I wont order anymore things.

A waste of money
This LeapPad system is very frustrating. My daughter got this for Christmas and played with it once or twice, and then got disgusted with it, and so did I.The biggest problem I had is that half the pages of the book that came with it don't work correctly. I touch the green go circle and it either starts telling the story on another page, or just makes a funny sound and does nothing. Or, even if it does read the info off the correct page, sometimes if I touch one thing, it will say it's another, like on the page with the parts of the body, I would touch the mouth and it would keep saying nose!I know I'm doing everything correctly because my son has the big LeapPad, which is the same principal. I should have just let my daughter play with his LeapPad and saved some money.

Absolute rubbish - don't waste your money
Absolute rubbish - don't waste your money. Kids get bored after 5 minutes. Find some other educational game with more entertainment factor for your children. This is not worth it.
