What is the hardness of the orange, blue, black sponge pads? What is the difference in pads? How are they used?

Hello, thank you for your question, the three colors have some differences in hardness, orange is the hardest, blue is the next, black is the softest, when you use different levels of polishing paint and polishing wax, you can apply it to different colors of pads, easy to distinguish during use. Yes. Like all DA, (Dual Action), "Orbital Sanders/Polishers", (aka "Random Orbital Sanders/Polishers"), the YELLOW SCREW IN PAD, with a black hook & loop pad on the bottom, free spins with bearings. And the energy produced from the orbital part spinning transfers to the pad causing it to spin. Which is why when you apply too much pressure, the pad will stop spinning while the orbital part continues to spin. NOTE: This unit has a 3mm throw, (orbit).

Can the rpm be adjusted? seems to fast for polishing work.

Yeah it comes with an airflow adjuster. It works well. I just keep mine adjusted all the way down and it makes quick work of small scratches. It really is a nice little polisher.
