Weakest Volume Yet
This might be the weakest volume by far as, beyond the first chapter or so it doesn’t really advance things much for the main characters. Sure we get characters actively dating but they’re both so head in the clouds that they don’t do anything laugh out loud.Mami gets much of the focus here and while she does make a sort of statement about the need to normalize male-female friendships, it just feels a little strange to do here when the main characters are in male-female friendships, and along those lines, many/most jpn school manga have male-female friendships going on that aren’t romantic (even moreso in the shonen jump affiliated series. In any case, I do think there was something there about wishing to be someone else just to be close to someone or even just to date them so I do wonder if there is going to be more along this line.Favorite moment was Toma gifting Taichi a handmade birthday present, Taichi’s reaction actually got him a little flustered lol.Still crossing my fingers that the dating in this chapter isn’t truly the endgame relationship. Please.

Some damage from shipping but satisfied about purchase.
It’s hard to see in the photo but there is some damage to the front cover, most likely from shipping. I’m happy with my purchase and can’t wait to read this volume.

This Beautifully Written Series Continues With Even More Fireworks
Each volume of Blue Flag has a main plot and a sub plot - the main plot forwarding the quadrangle aspects while the sub plot will focus around a theme. With 5, the focus is about how we deal with the concept of friends who are different genders. The boisterous personality of Mami showcases that dichotomy nicely as we learn more about her here.Story: The fireworks are amazing, Ichinose gets birthday wishes, and a very nervous relationship is formed between Futaba and Ichinose. Neither of the couple are sure how to handle this situation and what it means to be boyfriend and girlfriend. But as Mami begins to get very friendly with Ichinose, her motives are questioned and she comes out fighting with some hard truths about judgements and perceptions. This was a bit of a departure from the focus on Ichinose and Futaba. In a story that by the end of the volume you will fall in love with the previously annoying Mami, we get to learn about how she spends most of your life finding a friend who will respect her for herself. She doesn't want boys to fall for her, girls to be jealous of her, or friends to put conditions on their connection to her. When she is accused by several of getting friendly to Ichinose just to get access to Toma (and not being respectful of what that is doing to the girlfriend and boyfriend), she gets and gives some hard truths. But at the same time, Mami is never lionized and we come to understand how her actions are still very selfish.Kaito always has some fascinating insights into life, people, and especially high school teens. It's quite telling that he will take an otherwise annoying character and make you actually root for them and understand WHY they are so annoying by the end.In all, another amazing volume in this beautifully written series. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
