I wanted to like it.
So, I was hoping, beyond hope, that this thing would have more than just sexual fantasies in it. And where there are stories with sex as a side, there's not one story here that doesn't involve sex in some way shape or form.Like I was telling a woman on another forum, science fiction fans don't mind sex. In fact, we like it. It's part of the reason a segment of scifi fans buy trash like the American version of Heavy Metal, but the American Heavy Metal magazine is code for comic book porn for those who are embarrassed about sex in some way shape or form, but want access to sexually explicit material.Me, I was actually hoping for some stories that were more in depth as per the French Metal Hurlant publication, and when I view the old Heavy Metal animated feature I do sigh at the coitus and drug use scenes. As a pre-teen and teen with raging hormones it was a cheap thrill, but when one goes back to review it, one hopes that like a good high-minded scifi story that there might be something more there than simple sexual and masculine oriented fantasies.None such is the case here. Oh sure, there's an effort to try and dress it up as if there's something more happening here, but in the end, just leafing through the pages one sees that it's a publication designed to satiate sexual interests, and not much more. And not just sexual interest, but the fringe counter rock culture that's noted for being very unhygienic and indulgent in drug use. In short, the material is in poor taste, and has no redeeming value unless you're part of that culture in the first place. This is what gets me. The French magazine, Metal Hurlant, has actual stories with some sophistication of varying degrees, and some sex. But this thing doesn't even have that. They're stories as an excuse for sex, as opposed to sex being part of the story. And ultimately, where I want to enjoy the scope of the worlds presented in the fantasies put within the pages, you can't because the backdrop serves as nothing more than a backdrop. Wars, social strife, injustice, other like themes will have wait for another incarnation of Metal Hurlant, because as it stands now, Heavy Metal is nothing but sexual drug-laden garbage.

Nine hundred dollars??? Baloney!!!
Bought this back in 1992 as a young serviceman at Alameda. That was 28 years ago, and long long gone. Was looking to find this again...but $900.00 is pure robbery. No possible way that this is all that rare and in collector demand. Gave 3 stars for the content and nostalgic value, but I'd give it less than zero for the disgusting price.
