When Lenny Kravitz made his debut album, he was known in select circles as the pierced, tattooed love boy of Lisa Bonet, the actress then riding high with a starring role on The Cosby Show . Kravitz turned out to be an artist in his own right, and a talented musician who wrote, produced, and played nearly all the instruments on Let Love Rule . He seems to know precisely what he wants to say on this album; trouble is, it's all been said before, by the likes of Prince, John Lennon, and Sly Stone. There is skill and craft at work here, but genuine inspiration is another matter. The thick patchouli scent around songs such as "I Build This Garden for Us," "Flower Child," and the title track is nearly suffocating, while the would-be protest anthem "Mr. Cab Driver" is rather undercooked. Overall, Kravitz's groovy love-generation vibe makes him rock's answer to Austin Powers. --Daniel Durchholz Lenny Kravitz Photos More from Lenny Kravitz Review: always let love and soul in black music rule - - one of the problems with writing these reviews, from my heart, is the hopes that there is no modification/ censorship, of how one is able to express their self. as a professional and black female from Canada and Diaspora Jamaica as well, one of the essences/aspects/angles that please/d me about Mr. Kravitz's music, is how the lyrics speak to our oppressions, and struggle as black folk. for example, despite the fact that there are ignorant people in this nature-driven beautiful world, it is nice to throw on a Kravitz piece, to also meditate on what next to do in the matrix called racism and sexism (to begin). there is lots of racism and sexism in this global western world. i could go on about how sexy Mr. Kravitz looks, but personally i think Mr. Kravitz wants to be respected for his work and, as a respectful black person we don't sexualization our own. to presume mr. Kravitz's work is based on plagerism of others work, as was cited in this quote placed on here, from a cat named Daniel Kurchnolz, it is comical that clearly their commentary demonstrates everything so wrong about this world. if one wants to go there, what does one say about Mr. Michael Bolton, and his magical rise to stardom. and if we delve into that further, what exactly is Mr. Bolton's remakes based on? there is no comparison, but i think that when we write reviews from a black perspective we have to continue to feel our pulses like what is implicitly implied in the work of Mr. Kravitz. what Mr. Kravitz says in his music is to feel the soul and be that soul, it is up to the listener to understand what that feels like, as well to begin. if the starting point is to not feel soul because there not one in the inner, then how can one relate to the soul in the music-artistry of Mr. Kravitz? if you want to feel love, transpiration and empowerment, then you will love the music of including all of Mr. Kravitz songs. as a black person, we also let love rule in ways unknown by others. all the work of mr. kravitz is awesome! Review: Great cd - Brand new nothing to improve also songs were great as most of his cds

Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz can seemingly do anything~ sing, write, play guitar like no one's business. The LP, Let Love Rule, is fantastic and so is Lenny K.! From rockers to ballads to outright hilariously told tales, this is definitely an lp/cd to have in your collection. Bravo, Lenny! Thank you, Amazon!

4.5 Stars: Why is Durchholz's lame-brained review still posted on here? That MTV relic needed extra $$$ or what??? LOL, I bet...
Lenny was right about one thing: the way music sounded back during the turn of the '70s was and still is OFF THE FREAKIN' CHAIN! So committed to his solo debut was he (pretty much played at least 90% of the instruments himself, restless Gemini soul that he is) that he ended up recording the whole thing on vintage analog equipment! As a result, 'Let Love Rule' sounds like it came out in 1969 instead of 1989 and showcases a serious musical talent at work beneath all the seemingly "put-on" psychedelic trappings. His voice was also at its most raw and unabashedly youthful best on this album that has aged remarkably well over the past 28 years. Lots of soulful keyboard and saxophone work sprinkled throughout this one as well, which I do like very much in the kind of music I mostly listen to. If you're new to Kravitz, DEFINITELY start here! After that, continue working your way up (I'd skip 2004's Baptism, though; don't know where his head was at during that time-lol) until you're finally caught up with his work. Critics slammed him quite a bit back during the 90s for the silliest reasons they could possibly come up with, but it turns out Lenny got the last laugh in the end at their expense. Time to give the brother his long-overdue props, folks!

Excelente cd

Superbly Crafted
So many high spots. Great album to return to frequently as there is so much variety within it. Musicianship and vocals excellent. Many of the darker themes still v current. Also a softer feel and harmonies that remind you of the Beatles e.g. "let love rule" and "I bulid this garden for us." An album you should never tire of listening too - thoroughly recommended!
