Movie
One of the best movies in a long time. How didn't this make it to the theatre?

An amazing movie that I never heard of until I discovered it on Prime. NO SPOILERS.
There's almost nothing I love more than a good movie. Prior to discovering it on Prime, I had never heard of this film. Being a WWII and spy thriller fanatic, I decided to give this movie a chance. The movie starts slow as it builds the foundation of the story. Once the action begins, Allied takes you along for an epic love story wrapped around a WWII spy thriller that will keep you glued to your seat. I am not a sappy, emotional person. When this movie ended, I had to fight back tears. In addition to an absolutely amazing story, Robert Zemeckis crafted a visually stunning masterpiece. There are several scenes in this movie that will leave you speechless (including one the best love scenes of all time, but not for the reasons you would suspect). People that are expecting a shoot 'em up, non-stop action first, movie with over-the-top SFX (in the vein of Fast and Furious, etc), may not love this film (although it contains all of the aforementioned). Another reviewer suggested that prospective watchers of this movie ignore the negative reviews. I whole heartedly agree. Give this film a chance. As mentioned above, Zemeckis nailed this and deserved recognition for it. One of his best movies, if not his best. Marion Cotillard delivered an award worthy performance. There are several scenes that she single-handedly carried. In particular, the scene in front of the Jewlery store near the end. If there was a downside to this film, it was that Pitt's performance was slightly wooden and stiff. By the end, he delivered enough to adequately compliment Cotillard. One final thought...do yourself a favor and watch this in UHD. This film deserves it.

some negative reviews are basically silly
I read a few reviews that were critical of brad Pitts performance in this film. someone even criticized his French speaking, as if they hadn't watched the movie. it was part of the plot, discussing his terrible Parisian accent, and that it wasn't even a good French Canadian accent. his stiffness was appropriate for the character, as he was afraid to speak, bc of his terrible accent. really people? I love old movies, really old movies, and this is a nod to when movies were trying to make the stars bigger than life, and to make you think, and feel, but not in an overly demonstrative way. the costumes, the sound, and the plot were lovely. it isn't a movie that deserved an abundance of accolades, but we are all looking for movies to watch at home, that are worth our time. for those wanting lots of blood and gore, this has some violence, but it isn't over the top, and there is a love story, but the scenes are tasteful, not gratuitous. I actually agreed with whoever it was that pointed out that certain parts seemed rushed. early on, the timeline got pushed along a little too noticeably, and here and there throughout the film; which for me, takes me out of the unreality of watching the film, and causes me to start wondering about the process of film making, like why did they make that decision, and that really isn't a good thing when watching a film usually. the end was sad.

War is Tragedy
World War II was as close humanity has ever come to Armageddon. Estimates of the total number killed during the war range from 50 million to as high as 80 million. To put that in perspective, the entire modern day populations of France, UK and Germany are 64, 65 and 81 million respectively. What those numbers all too easily conceal, is that each of those victims was the son or daughter of a father and mother. Each victim of that horrific war was a loved one to someone, for at least some phase of their life. When one attempts to digest the tragedy of WWII in terms that delve deeper than mere numbers, our common human capacity for compassion and empathy are stretched beyond means by the staggering numbers, but the truth is that every single death was a tragedy born from needless aggression, greed, and dehumanizing egotism.Allied is a masterful window into that war which manages to convey the tragedy of all those deaths by focusing on the experiences of one Canadian SAS agent and the resistance fighter with whom he becomes embroiled in North Africa. The movie achieves its masterful poignancy through a careful balancing of cinematic elements: fights, seductions and negotiations, all brought to life with textured, colorful and exotic renderings comprising excellent camera work, consistently above average acting (and more than one fine performance), extraordinary sets, costumes and props and an effective and non-intrusive sound track. The violence is convincingly shocking and abrupt, the intrigue is sufficient, the mystery engrossing. If I could give the movie a 4.5 I would do so, as it is not in truth "perfect." But it achieves what it sought to with total success and leaves the viewer with the strong sense of just how tragic that war, and in truth all wars truly were.

Awful story, good acting.
I am wondering why I see so many reviews that seem to love this movie and praise it on the basis of a "true love story" of "real people". She was a German spy during WWII for goodness sake. She kept spying on her British husband, passing the classified information to the Nazis. Undoubtedly this caused death and suffering of so many innocent people. What an appalling, sick, evil woman. The best think she's done was killing herself. It makes me think of the wives of Nazi officers who supervised concentration camps like Auschwitz, during the day tortured the prisoners, sent them to gas chambers and executed in any way they fancied, then coming back home at night to their wives and children, socializing, playing the part of the "loving" family men.Watching the emotional scenes and listening to the romantic music which should somehow make the viewer feel compassionate towards their "love" just made me sick. It was like being brainwashed.

Scorching Spy Drama
Brad Pitt (playing a Canadian) stars in a pleasantly low key drama. A more intimate look at World War II, character driven with an international cast, and based on a true story.

ALLIED-VERTRAUTE FREMDE
Schade
