No they do not lock, but they are still a very sturdy pair of tongs.

Mine have gone through dishwasher many times, I see no problems

It seems just right to me. It certainly is not flimsy. I would be more concerned about tongs that are cheaply made with thin metal. This is not that; it has a nice feel to it.
