Do you love weirdo art metal mixed with ambient segues created by a veritable Damn Yankees worthy supergroup of aforementioned art metal veterans. I do, so it follows that I dig this record, somewhat shocking in it's skronky aggression. Give "Rats" a listen, long electronic dissonance followed by groovy ferocity. A real surprise, as I really didn't expect OMG to ever do anything again. My hats off, Gloomies.

I am a big fan of Isis, but I am not that into the other bands represented in Old Man Gloom. I liked the other OMG releases all right, but I never thought that they were phenomenal. Based on my tastes, I should not like this album as much as I do, but well, I do. There is just something in there that keeps drawing me to it, and I am unable to put my finger on what it is. It's a very heavy and crushing record, but there are long moments of space and single guitar setting the tone that were beautifully executed and mixed. I guess that it is the atmosphere that these guys create that does it for me. I also like how they have incorporated the more experimental side into the songs. After recently listening to the Mosquito Control and Red Sea by Isis, I've realized that parts of this album are almost like something from a parallel universe showing us what Isis might have progressed to if Cliff Meyer had never joined (very glad that he did, because we ended up with both Isis and OMG producing quality albums that were very different in style). Highly recommended!

So many bands can be classified or pigeonholed by their sound. OMG cannot. While adjectives are useful in describing them, the whole picture is incomplete until you experience this album for yourself. Even pointing to other bands, or the members' current/previous bands, can't really quantify this assault. Heavy is the first adjective that fits. Metal is another one, but metal means different things to different people. Elements of Doom or Sludge are mixed at random with Metalgaze, Noisecore, Hardcore, and post-Hardcore. So Heavy definitely fits, but the hypnotic reverb and ambiance hints at something more sinister in it's design and function. Parts remind you of Horseback's noisy side, while others scream NeurIsis worship, and all of it begs for your undivided attention, then beats you in the face and neck when you stop paying attention! OMG is an all encompassing mass, that blacks out the light and pulls you into their spiraling madness. Clean passages and acoustic guitar set you up with hope, while the band is really just buttering you up for a pummeling you wont soon forget. Probably their longevity has something to do with it, but I don't know any other supergroups that have as singularly focused a vision as OMG. That sounds strange to say, when I've just described all these disparate elements in regards to their sound, but it's true. This mix works. It's devastatingly brutal. It's undeniably powerful. It's engaging and interesting, and leaves the listener wanting more. If Isis is no more, and Cave-In and Neurosis sound the way they do now, then Old Man Gloom is all that's left, swimming in a black sea of transcendent despair.
