No they cant also buy a indoor bug zapper from Amazon and you will have no more fruit flies or any other.

What do they mean by add half of water to the airlock? do they mean fill it up halfway with water?

Save yourself the time and don't buy these. They don't seal properly.

Yes, I put mine in the very top rack in my dishwasher, I have the 3rd rack so small items stay contained
