Behringer CP1A High-Performance Power Supply Module for Eurorack

truly the best budget power supply. it stays cool running verbos and erica fusion tube vco and drum sequencer, and the rest of the 60hp case i was powering... for hours. never even got warm. i would recommend upgrading to a premium ribbon cable, just so you can sleep easier, but the stock one did me just fine. people will say this thing is trash who never even owned it cause they hate x, y, and z about the brand. watched a recent interview w/uli and i can safely say he's not the monster people illustrate him as, he mostly wants to make equipment accessible to kids growing up w/no money and doesn't think like an elitist. people trip cause they make clones but the same people will rock a mutable instruments clone by any given company and think nothing of it, despite emile specifically saying they don't want people cloning them directly. in any event, this is a very solid circuit, it feels extremely well crafted to the touch, solid as a rock. their clone of plaits for example, has some cheap things about it, namely no metal nut around the input jacks. but for this instance, behringer built a small tank. every other option out there 3X the price, i've read has heat issues. i cannot say from experience, but to put things into perspective, i was terrified going into this because i came from using a pittsburgh structure 208 powered case... the psu in that thing looks like it could function as a central air unit w/multiple components tactfully installed within the well crafted wood. so going from that to this, i had my concerns. all of which were for no reason. just bear in mind the power limit, stay under it and leave a margin or get two and you'll be a-okay. very ideal for a little system. very ideal as a hold me over device. i would like i said, get a board instead of the floating ribbon cable so things are stationary and nothing ever has a chance of touching, or you can fasten the ribbon by some means, tape, or ties and some screws to hold the ties, get creative. i think the people who say it fried their modules probably touched something to something or undercalculated. CP1A is as solid as all hell. get it. the box it comes in is amazing. by what i know, their whole eurorack expedition is more of a passion project than a profit, as in they don't really make a lot off of it, they just have such a big brand they can afford to make things like this where they essentially just break even. i also just love the simplicity of the design, the beautiful finish of the panel, solid metal and the old school metal switch. it feels pleasant in your hand, to the touch.

Purchased 6 of these for various synths. 1 needed to be replaced (DOA, reason for dropping a star), the rest have been rock solid. One of these will power 104hp in most cases. Why spend more $ on tiptop with a lesser power wall wart? Love Behringer modules!

i've had this installed in a smaller, portable eurorack setup and provided enough power for all my modules. with low noise. However about six months after purchase I had it suddenly power off right after powering on with blue smoke an all. I recently purchased a Tiptop powersupply and was relived to find none of my modules were damaged.

Die Behringer CP1A ist keine besonders elegante, aber eine sehr günstige und in der Praxis brauchbare Stromversorgung für Eurorack-Gehäuse. Ich besitze mittlerweile drei dieser PSUs. Zwei davon stecken in kleinen 60-HP-Cases, liegend von hinten eingeschoben, und versorgen die dort eingebauten Module zuverlässig. Eine weitere nutze ich im Labor als eine meiner Entwicklungs-PSU, unter anderem zum Testen selbst entworfener Module und Komponenten. Genau dafür ist die CP1A aus meiner Sicht ziemlich gut geeignet: nicht High-End, aber bezahlbar, kompakt und funktional.Äußerlich ist das Modul schlicht gehalten. Es gibt einen Barrel-Anschluss für das externe Netzteil, drei LEDs für +5 V, +12 V und -12 V sowie einen Kippschalter zum Ein- und Ausschalten. Die Frontplatte besteht aus bedrucktem Metall, wirkt nicht luxuriös, aber für den Preis ordentlich. Auch die geringe Bautiefe ist praktisch, weil die CP1A dadurch in viele kleine oder flachere Gehäuse passt. Der Kippschalter ragt allerdings etwas vor und ist nicht gegen versehentliches Betätigen gesichert. Ebenfalls schade: Für den Barrel-Stecker gibt es keine Zugentlastung oder Verriegelung. In einem fest stehenden Case ist das kein Drama, bei mobilen Setups würde ich darauf aber achten.Technisch sollte man den Begriff „Hochleistungs-Netzteilmodul“ etwas nüchterner sehen. Die CP1A liefert bis zu 1.000 mA auf +12 V, 1.000 mA auf -12 V und 500 mA auf +5 V. Das ist für diese Bauform nicht ungewöhnlich, aber eben auch kein Leistungsmonster. Ich würde eine solche PSU nicht bis zur letzten Milliampere-Grenze ausreizen, sondern eher mit ungefähr 80 Prozent der angegebenen Maximalleistung planen. Beim Einschalten ziehen viele Module kurzzeitig mehr Strom, und etwas Reserve hilft gegen Startprobleme, unnötige Wärme und allgemein gegen Ärger, den man bei Eurorack-Stromversorgung wirklich nicht braucht.Bei meinen Exemplaren bewegt sich das Ripple-Verhalten in einem niedrigen und unkritischen Bereich. Mit einem vernünftigen Power-Distribution-Board wird es zusätzlich sauberer und übersichtlicher. Die beiliegenden Flying-Bus-Kabel nutze ich persönlich nicht, sondern lege sie direkt in die Schublade und ersetze sie durch ordentliche Busboards. Das spart Platz, reduziert Kabelsalat und macht das gesamte Case aufgeräumter. Die Flying-Bus-Lösung funktioniert grundsätzlich, ist für mich aber eher die billigste Lösung als die beste.Die Wärmeentwicklung bleibt bei sinnvoller Last moderat. Auch das ist ein Pluspunkt, denn in kleinen Cases kann Abwärme schnell unangenehm werden. Die CP1A wirkt hier nicht überfordert, solange man sie nicht komplett ausreizt. Bei älteren Versionen lag noch ein externes Netzteil mit ordentlichem Kabel zur Steckdose bei. Bei neueren Exemplaren findet man eine Wandwarze im Karton. Funktional ist das weiterhin in Ordnung, ergonomisch finde ich es aber einen Rückschritt, weil solche Steckernetzteile an Mehrfachsteckdosen einfach nerven.Unterm Strich ist die CP1A eine sehr pragmatische Eurorack-PSU. Sie ist nicht die schönste, nicht die stärkste und nicht die edelste Lösung, aber sie ist günstig, kompakt und in vielen normalen Setups völlig ausreichend. Für kleine Cases, als Zusatzversorgung oder als günstige Labor-PSU ist sie aus meiner Sicht ein ziemlich schwer zu schlagendes Angebot.Vorteile:+ sehr günstiger Preis+ kompakte Bauform mit geringer Tiefe+ +12 V, -12 V und +5 V vorhanden+ LEDs für alle drei Rails+ moderate Wärmeentwicklung bei sinnvoller Last+ brauchbar für kleine Cases und Testaufbauten+ externes Netzteil im Lieferumfang+ für einfache bis mittlere Eurorack-Setups ausreichendNachteile:- neuere Wandwarze ergonomisch schlechter als ein Netzteil mit Kabel
